'Sometimes I wonder why we stay,' Those were the words Luke said to me once after we'd finished a mission near the Iraq border. We'd lost two men, and he never took that well. 'The war's supposed to be over, but we're still here like it isn't. What's the point?'
I never told him, but I'd asked myself the same question. We were there, but it felt like we weren't supposed to be there. Then, that mess with Jann Ibn Jann happened, and Luke was the first to suggest we walk away. He said it felt like a sign that the moon goddess didn't want us there anymore and that we should've been somewhere else. The difference between us was that he wanted to stop fighting, and I didn't.
I know why, but we never discussed it.
