Ivan stares at the box for a moment before opening it. I turn away from him, waiting until he's had a chance to examine Marcus's little gift.
Marcus's confidence was astounding. He'd been so sure I'd give in. He'd had these ready for us.
"I've seen this before." Ivan comments. I finally turn to look at him. "Bradly wears one of these."
"Chloe has one too," I remember the pendant she had on her necklace. "There's magic on these."
"Can we pick them up?" He scowls at them like they're silver.
"They're safe." I reach over and grab the one with his name on it. "The ritual wasn't complete, so it's useless."
"Why didn't you show us this before?"
"I don't know… It felt wrong to show anyone. But Marcus wanted us to wear them. As a physical reminder that we belonged to him. That I'd betrayed you."
