“What was that all about?” Anna came to Mako’s stall, still staring at the barn door.
Aurelie slowly stood up. “I don’t know.”
Mako stirred slightly, raising his head and snorting gently.
“Mako!” Aurelie lunged to her horse, stroking his head. She buried his soft nose in her kisses.
Dr. Cole and Braxton came to the stall, and together with Aurelie, Anna, and Jason, the team encouraged the tired horse to his feet.
“He’s still weak,” Dr. Cole muttered, more to himself than anyone else. “We’ll have to watch him.”
Aurelie nodded, “At least the fever has broken.”
“We’ll take his temperature again,” Dr. Cole said cautiously. “I’ll be in touch, Aurelie.”
The vet left instructions and medication for Mako before leaving. It had been a long day for everyone, and Anna and Jason left soon after.
“Aurelie,” Braxton put his hand on his barn manager’s shoulder. “It’s time to rest. We can’t do any more for Mako right now.”
Aurelie hung her head, “His burns were healing so well…”
