He remembered all this as they climbed out of the car and walked into the parking lot. They made their way to the trail, silent, but more aware of each other than Howard imagined they had been in a very long time. By the time they reached the first of the three waterfall overlooks, they had achieved a rhythm that made them look like they had been together for years. Howard looked over at Jason. In many ways, they had.
The sight of the falls and those memories of that time brought something up in Howard that he hadn’t felt in years. He wasn’t going to cry, but he wouldn’t test his walls in battle right now either. He crossed to a wooden rail and stood there. He had been to the falls in the last decade. He could recall at least two separate times when he had taken the kids, but that had felt different. Maybe because it had been about the kids. Or maybe because this time Jason was there again.
