Chapter 46: Queen Chloe

MALIA’S POV:

The wedding bells clanged and echoed through the palace, penetrating the rock labyrinth for Malia to hear. She wished she had a window to look out. She wished she could see the sun above and the Aeonian countryside below or the endless sea beyond. But all she could see in the darkness were her hands and knees. All she could do was imagine, and fear, and hope.

How could Charles be so confident in their escape? Was it all for show? To make her feel better? Or did he have some elaborate plan to spring her to safety? She clutched at the swan-embroidered scarf, stroking it for comfort. It was all she had left.

CHARLES’S POV:

A palace tailor dressed Charles in a traditional Aeonian robe. Charles remembered it from his lessons with Malia. His hands and feet were unbound now, but an escort of three armed soldiers followed him everywhere he went, keeping a careful eye on his every move.
