The room fell into a brief silence, and Albert hadn't expected Professor Brode to be so straightforward about the matter. However, he nodded, indicating that he understood.
Indeed, ancient magical writings are no longer in use today unless one needs to decipher ancient books.
As for using them to cast spells?
In Albert's understanding, Dumbledore might have had that ability. Whether others could skillfully use them remained a question.
It was like when he first learned English in his previous life. The sentences in the English books had to be looked up word by word in the dictionary to barely understand their original meaning.
"Can I take a look at the Runic script on the parchment?" Albert pointed to the parchment on the table and asked Professor Brode.
"Of course, no problem." Professor Brode seemed curious about Albert's proficiency in Runic script.
He didn't expect Albert to be able to understand it, so he didn't stop him from reading it because the Runic symbols on the parchment were already very fragmented.
With Professor Brode's permission, Albert picked up the parchment and read it carefully. He found the Runic script on it to be very strange. At first glance, Albert recognized that they were similar to the Runic symbols he had used not long ago.
Unlike the Runic script in the Muggle world, these Runic symbols were connected. To decipher them, one needed to study each one individually.
Albert noticed that there were annotations next to some of the Runic symbols, presumably left by Professor Bathilda Bagshot or Professor Brode.
Meaning... eyes, tree, spring...
These were just a few words, but they made Albert furrow his brows slightly. He felt like he had touched something, but couldn't remember it for the time being.
"These symbols... have been scrambled?" Albert asked uncertainly.
"Yes, they have been scrambled." Professor Brode nodded and said, "As you can see, these Runic scripts are difficult to translate."
"Yeah, they need to be disassembled and studied to be understood." Albert said seriously.
Are all ancient magical writings like this?
No, Albert had read books woven with ancient magical writings before. This kind was obviously different; it belonged to runic symbols.
However, he really didn't know who had so much time and bother to create such a pile of Runic symbols.
Albert didn't say this, but he did think so. Only a few people could understand Runic script itself, and now someone had turned them into symbols, combined the symbols into a passage. How many people could truly understand them?
Or were these symbols actually created by Professor Bathilda Bagshot for Professor Brode to practice ancient magical writings?
Just as Albert was contemplating, someone suddenly knocked on the door of the office.
Katrina MacDougal appeared outside the door of the Dark Arts Defense Office, looking surprised at Albert, who was standing in front of the desk carefully reading the parchment. She couldn't help but blink her eyes, seemingly curious about how he ended up here.
When the door was knocked, Albert also looked up and coincidentally met Katrina, who had just pushed open the door. He just nodded slightly at her and continued to focus his attention on the parchment.
The more Albert deciphered the Runic symbols on the parchment, the more he felt that something in his memory was starting to loosen, but he hadn't figured out what was going on yet.
"I just played two rounds of Wizard's Chess with Mr. Anderson, and he's quite skilled." Professor Brode noticed Katrina's puzzled gaze and casually remarked, "But Mr. Anderson seems interested in ancient magical writings. Katrina, why don't you sit down and play a game of chess with me?"
Professor Brode looked favorably upon Albert.
Katrina had already guessed this. After all, Albert was a genius, and geniuses were always treated differently.
"Focus," Professor Brode noticed Katrina's distracted attention and reminded her, "Don't worry too much about what others think. Just focus on doing your own thing."
"Okay!" Katrina refocused her attention on the chessboard on the table. However, she still ended up losing the game. When she absentmindedly raised her head, she found Albert sitting at Professor Brode's desk, seemingly writing something.
"How dare he..."
"Professor, the Runic symbols on the parchment aren't complete, right?" Albert, relying on his understanding of Runic script, spent nearly half an hour translating most of the symbols.
"Oh, why do you say that?" Professor Brode curiously asked. Albert was correct; the symbols here were only a partial representation.
"Yeah, when I translated it, it didn't form a coherent sentence." Albert walked over with the parchment covered in letters.
I think these are two famous poems from the "Words of the Gods."
"The 'Words of the Gods,' what's that?" Katrina directed her gaze at the parchment in Albert's hand, asking in confusion.
"It's about the origin of Runic script," Albert said simply. "Odin exchanged one eye for the Well of Wisdom... In order to seek the secrets of higher intelligence, he hung himself on a tree for nine days and nights and stabbed himself with a spear, and his blood coalesced on the ground into Runic symbols."
Albert translated the Runic symbols into text by guessing and making connections with things he had seen before.
Initially, he didn't react for a moment when he first translated them.
But as he deciphered more and more symbols, Albert was able to piece together most of the content.
Katrina looked bewildered, but she knew what Runic script was.
Compared to Katrina, Professor Brode beside her was shocked and incredulous.
Professor Brode had never expected Albert to decipher it.
Was he just making things up?
No, that was highly unlikely.
"By the way, are you sure you only recently taught yourself Runic script?" Professor Brode's face twitched continuously, and in his mind, he shouted, "And you have the audacity to say you can barely understand it?"
If this was considered barely understanding it, what could be said of those who excelled in Runic script?
"Professor Brode?" Albert looked up, calling out in confusion, and Professor Brode suddenly snapped back to reality, smiling as he explained, "I'm not quite sure either, because I'm also trying to figure it out, but I think that should be the case."
"Professor Bathilda Bagshot would definitely be pleased that you've chosen ancient magical writings. If you're interested, you can write her a letter or go to the side..." Professor Brode thought for a moment but felt it wasn't appropriate, as he believed Albert might not even need to attend classes anymore.
To be honest, there were still many symbols left on the desk that Albert hadn't used the Magical Dictionary for, but he disassembled, translated, and pieced them together.
Whether Professor Bathilda Bagshot had this ability, Professor Brode wasn't sure, but he was certain he didn't.
