The Third Law

Four months have passed since our faithful heroes began matriculating at the Grand Magician Academy. Bryce, Althea, and Ellie have all completed their first round of classes and are now on their second round of classes. Terrick has finished all but his Music magic class. He was now a proficient level Music magician. He attributed much of his speedy learning to his Elvish ocarina which seems to be giving him a Music attribute buff. However, it turned out that most of his Music spells were non-combat related. This has not deterred him though since he was a musician by heart anyway. Plus, he could possibly learn combat related Music spells in the future.

Though they were all taking 8 classes each, there was only one class they shared together, Magical Runes. Since they have decided to branch out and take on subjects that piqued their interests. Ellie has focused on taking the Healing and Science related classes of Magical Biology, Mana Sensing, Potion making, and Magical Research. The last class, she attended with Althea who was also interested in the more technical aspects of developing Scientific and Magical understanding.

Bryce continued to take more battlefield related classes like Curses and Hexes, Arcane Magic, Magical Encryption, and etc. He is also taking Magical Smiting with Terrick since both of them enjoyed the idea of knowing how to craft their own armor and weapons. Terrick's Fire Magus recommended that he take the aforementioned class along with Magical Crafting, Magical Summoning, and Druidcraft because of his high-quality mana and ability to create high and consistent burning Fire.

Terrick has also now achieved his second variant: Blue Fire magic, which has the special characteristics of being a hotter flame and being difficult to put out by either physical or magical means. Also, Blue Fire magic is easy to control because it will only burn what you want it to burn leaving everything else intact and unscorched. It is the best Fire for burning things that conventionally do not succumb to fire damage and when being outdoors because it is resistant to Water and Wind. Finally, Blue Fire magic can be manipulated to take on forms but Terrick has yet to reach this level of mastery. For now, he is content on being able to conjure a small wisp of blue flame that seem to dance and follow him around the house and school.

The twins, Vane and Lest, are now on their last round of classes. After their conversation with the Principal, the two have become even more motivated than before. As it turns out, their mother, the Grand Duchess, did give them a severe tongue lashing but did not recall them home. A major part of the reason of their reprieve came in the form of their older brother, Lyle who interceded in their mother's wrath. The whole ordeal did change them to become more somber and mindful of their opportunity to remain as students at the academy. Althea noticed that they seem to be more driven which was impressive since she considered them prodigious even before the events of the dungeon capture.

Rhald has been practically absent aside from the times when he stops by to give Althea and Ellie tutelage on Perfecting Water magic. He has been driven to finish the last of his classes and receive the title of Grand Magician before the audience with the King. He gave them their last lesson a couple of days ago. He still wears his signature grin but Thea could tell that this was a mere façade. She has tried to talk to him but he has been so distant as of late, which was unfortunate since she has grown accustomed to having him around.

Althea and Ellie have now reached enough proficiency with their variant magics of Ice, Illusion, Mist and Acid to be considered Perfect Water magicians. Ellie's Illusion magic was still weak but she could now cast convincing images to non-Water magicians. Water magicians have a natural resistance against effects of Water variant spells, which included Illusion magic.

This is explained by the third of the 4 Basic Laws of Elemental Magic, which states that those who are blessed with a particular element have some natural resistance and immunity to spells of that same elemental magic and its variant family. This explains why Fire magicians don't get burned by Fire spells or why Water magicians don't usually frostbite when faced with Ice attacks. There is an important caveat to this rule: If there is a significant difference in mana input or if the elemental quality is significantly higher, this natural resistance and immunity can be overcome.
