When I awoke there was new clothing spread out on the floor by the bed as well as shoes, and a hooded cloak. They were impressively plain, but clearly well made, and they appeared to be sturdy. I halfway expected there to be a note with them, but she had probably assumed I couldn't read. Most people couldn't read anyways. She just happened to be wrong about me.
I could read. Although I didn't read often. I rolled out of bed as my leg throbbed in protest. It hurt less that yesterday so I ignored it as I quickly pulled on the new clothes. I had decided to escort her home as asked so I would be taking whatever payment I could get.
I stretched slowly, and looked for my sword quickly. I didn't see it in the room, and that was when I remembered that I had left it attached to my saddle. Which was still on my horse. I felt almost naked without my sword on my hip, but I didn't have a choice so I decided I would retrieve my sword as quickly as I could. I walked down the stairs calmly.
My footfalls were loud to my ears, but I doubted that anyone else would hear me. I was in the middle of the tavern by the time anyone noticed me, but I was only given a passing glance as I crossed the tavern. That was until she noticed me. Faith raised her hand as if to draw my attention. I ignored her continuing to head for the door.
"Swordsman," she called.
I waved her off as I looked back at her. I wasn't trying to leave. Just get my sword. I decided I didn't have to stop, and explain myself to her so I kept walking despite the worried look on her face. I shoved through the doors, and whistled for my horse.
I felt almost like a new man. It was amazing what a night of sleep, and a meal could do. My horse trotted up to me, and I removed my sword from the saddle. Strapping it to my belt as I turned around to see Faith studying me.
"A unarmed man is a dead man," I adjusted my sword so I could draw it quickly when needed.
"Would you like to eat before we leave?" Faith asked.
"As long as you're buying," I smiled tensely.
