The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

Time

Tuesday classes passed far too quickly. Savannah managed to put off smelling me until after classes, but she still didn't like that I made her smell me.

"Could we try to cover up my scent?" I suggested.

"No," Savannah grumbled, "I doubt that would work. They'd probably notice if you smelled like perfume, and come after you anyways."

"Do you think we could try reasoning with them?" Ethan suggested.

"If that were the case then Goliath wouldn't have warned us about them," I tapped my talons on the floor.

Time wasn't on our side on this one. I paused mid tap as I mentally ran through our options again.

"Is killing them off the table?" I thought out loud.

I wouldn't mind the xp, but at the same time.

"No," Savannah shook her head huffing out a breath, "If they act as a pack then they're bound react in some way that ends badly for us."

I nodded slowly, "That's what I was thinking too."

We all sat there silently for a while as we tried to think of something we could do. I got bored of waiting for someone to suggest something.

"I need to work on holding back," I sighed, "I'm going to see if Goliath is ok with me using his room for a few hours."

"What about the werewolves?" Savannah got this look on her face that just said, really?

"Sitting in here agonizing about it won't change anything," I tapped at my watch, "So I'm going to work on something I can control."

I sent the message out to Goliath. All I had left to do now was wait. My wings twitched as I relaxed back into the magic air zone I had been trying to get into before. My watch buzzed bringing me back to full awareness. I looked down at the response that Goliath had sent me.

"Ethan, Savannah," I snorted, "I'm going to go work on holding back. You can come with if you want, but I'm not going to be doing anything dangerous or stupid."

I closed the door. Switched forms, and got dressed quickly before rushing over to the simulation arena. Someone tried to intercept me, but I didn't know him so I just dodged him, and kept running. A few others after him tried to do the same, but I avoided all of them. I didn't like them coming after me the way they were.

I kicked the next dude that tried to stop me in the nards. Then rounded on the rest of them.

"What do you want?" I tensed ready for a fight.

"Ballsy for a first year," The one that looked Mexican spoke up.

"I'm headed to meet a teacher," I clenched my fists, "And I'm not in the mood. Do you really want to do this right now?"

Now I was looking at four irritated students. One second year, and three first years. The second year was the Mexican who had spoken up. I huffed out a breath as they came closer. I stomped on nards dudes ankle. Breaking it easily.

I heard the ding notifying me of my easy win as I tensed for the rest of them to come after me. The next one rushed in manipulating the ground around my feet to try, and hold me up. I'd already moved from the spot he was manipulating. My fist found his gut less than a second later. Ding.

I closed in on the next one while he was still panicking mid ability use. The first years simply couldn't handle someone who knew how to fight. The last first year fell to a quick punch to the forehead. Then there was just the Mexican left. I didn't know what his ability was.

I wanted to figure it out before I rushed in.

"Come on," I snapped, "I don't have all day."

He flipped me off. Then disappeared. Invisibility? I switched to infrared, and clocked him one to the nuts. Followed by a jaw shot that had to have rattled his brains.

Ding. Yes. Bonus five guys added to my xp. I fist pumped enthusiastically, and practically skipped the rest of the way to the simulation arena. Goliath was waiting for me outside.

I nodded to him before heading in without him.

"What kept you?" Goliath came in after me.

"Some jerks that wanted to steal my credits," I snorted as I rounded to face Goliath.

"What did you do?" Goliath gave me a stern look.

"Knocked them out," I didn't see any point in lying to him, "They picked the fight. I just ended it."

"You're on thin ice," Goliath shoved me towards the arena, "Just because I let you go doesn't mean you can do whatever you wish."

"Sorry sir," I headed down to the arena, "I don't react well when I'm pushed."

Goliath just gave me a look. That look worried me. Acting timid didn't really suit me.

"Punch the targets," Goliath clicked away at the control panel, "I'll relay your power levels, and we'll try to get you down to what you want."

I nodded, and followed his instructions. I spent a good three hours working on bringing my strength levels down to believable levels before dinner. I was starting to worry about backlash so I decided to head to dinner, and get something to eat before going back to the dorms. The meat was good tonight. If it wasn't for the crushing exhaustion than I would've been happy.

I shrugged off Ethan's attention when I got back to the dorm, and went into my room right off the bat. Passing out as soon as I'd shifted, and dropped my head. Wednesday passed far to quickly as well. I practiced toning my strength down with Goliath again after classes. Goliath was watching me carefully every time he saw me now.

He was waiting for me to do something. If I had to guess. He was probably waiting for me to screw up in a way that required him to act accordingly. I wasn't stupid enough to force his hand nor did I want him coming after me. I did exactly what I said I would when I was with him, and didn't plan on making a lair of myself anytime soon.
