The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

Final Day of the Evaluations

I was sent back to my room. Three hundred multiple choice questions had made my brain feel a little numb so I relaxed in my room. I tried to keep one of my shirts in the air using my wind, but it was pretty difficult. My shirt kept folding in on itself, and falling to the floor. It was frustrating.

I just couldn't pull it off for more than a second or two. At least my brain didn't feel numb anymore. What is the plan for tomorrow? I wondered to myself. There was definitely another day of evaluations to go.

What exactly did they plan on having us do? We'd already done all the physical stuff, and now we'd finished a huge test. What was next? There was no point in worrying about it. I would find out in the morning.

Ethan came back sometime later. I was still trying to hold my shirt up with my wind. I was still failing to do it. I tried to massage Savannah, but it was blocked. Looked like they treated cheating pretty seriously.

I wondered how Savannah was doing. My bond said that she was fine, but I knew she was nervous about something. It was hard to tell. My bond to her wasn't nearly as strong as my bond to Ethan so her emotions didn't come through as clearly. It made it much more difficult for me to read her.

Ethan on the other hand was pretty much an open book for me. I wanted to check on her badly. She was still the one I worried about most. Well besides Goliath, but I had no way to monitor him. No point in worrying about what I couldn't control.

I needed to put some serious thought into what I would be doing tomorrow. That was something I could do something about. The evaluations were intentionally vague on all the schedules. We weren't supposed to know what was going to happen. They were probably just trying to prevent cheating, but it still worried me.

Dinner was delivered a few hours later. I stuffed it all down once he left. It was definitely easier to eat when I was in my real body. The portions made a lot more sense as well. I ate enough to put most heavyset folks to shame.

I nosed the door open, and watched Ethan try to look up stuff on his desk screen.

"What do you think they'll have us do tomorrow?" I cocked my head.

"I think the whole point was for us not to know," Ethan replied without looking at me.

He seemed kind of frustrated as well. Were my emotions effecting him that much. No. That wasn't it.

"Do you miss Savannah?" I smirked.

Ethan turned red, "No."

"Lair," I edged closer, "Ethan, and Savannah, sitting in a tree, K I S S I N G."

"Shut up," Ethan was surprisingly close to beet red, "How old are you? Because you sound like a two year old."

"Who cares?" I laughed, "It was worth it."

Ethan slammed my door in my face with his telekinesis, and I chuckled to myself a bit longer. I fell asleep about an hour later. I slept pretty damn good despite my worries about what we were supposed to be doing tomorrow. I woke up to my alarm the next morning. Shaking the stiffness out of my limbs as I stood.

Switching, and then getting dressed as usual before stepping out into the common area. Then we did our normal routine of breakfast than classes. I didn't eat much for breakfast like usual. While I could tolerate eggs they still weren't meat. We still had the little cubicles from yesterday set up around our desks.

A fresh blank packet on our desks with lined pages next to it. The blank page in front of me on the front of the packet was annoying. After we all sat down the teacher slapped his desk drawing our attention.

"Today is the essay portion of the evaluations," He spoke a little louder than necessary, "Read the situation on each page, and then write what you believe is the best course of action, and why? You have until noon to finish the entire packet. Just noon. There are real combat situations on those pages. That real soldiers encountered. You would have even less time to react in the field. Extra paper has been provided if it is needed. No answer or poor answer means you would have died in that situation. If you need additional pages for an answer than put the situation number in the top right corner. Begin whenever you're ready."

I opened the packet.

Situation 1

You are alone. You have four shotgun shells left, and no other ammunition. Other supplies include a damaged radio, 2 days of rations, and an unused emergency beacon. You have spotted a member of the demonic race close to your position. What do you do?

My answer.

Hide, activate my emergency beacon, and look for an opportunity to run. I don't have the skills or abilities necessary to kill a member of the demonic race, and I'm not fast enough to outright outrun him. The demonic race doesn't posses particularly strong sensory ability's so as long as I stay hidden he shouldn't be able to find me.

At least that's what the me the school knows would do.

Situation 2

You are with a four man team. You are wounded headed back to base with low ammunition. You have 1 pistol, no rations, you are unsure how much ammunition you have left, and do not know what the rest of your team has left. You are in a military issue all terrain vehicle that has also taken significant damage. You are attacked by a pack of Vaskree hounds. What do you do?

Vaskree hounds. System have I learned about these yet?

Yes. 6 legged wolf like creatures. Blue in color. Highly aggressive. Capable of using basic water magic, and poison. Adult specimens weight approximately 400 pounds.

All caught up to my one chapter daily goal. Feel free to contact my author email for any questions. No spoilers naturally, but I am willing to give you more personal information about the characters.
