Chapter 43: The Mystics' Gambit

Patch POV

“Us? Lie to you?”

Elder Hebub spluttered, but Patch detected a hint of the theatrical in his voice.

“Maybe ‘lying’ is too strong a word,” Patch admitted, circling the elder. “But you haven’t exactly been straightforward, either.”

Elder Hebub lifted his chin, his bejeweled nose in the air. “What’s your evidence?”

“Me being allowed to roam around the shrine freely,” Patch replied. “And this …”

He transformed into his wolf form, then prowled around just so the monks and nuns could see him. He did make a handsome wolf. With the show over, he transformed back, not caring that he stood naked in front of everyone.

“If you really dosed me with wolfsbane, I would be too sick to do anything. I don’t care how much moonbeam magic you bombarded it with to make it non-lethal,” he proclaimed. “Anneliese, Tulaska, is that even possible?”

Anneliese shook her head. “Not to my knowledge.”
