Chapter 29: A Startling Invitation

Patch POV

“You all may very well survive the Pure Heart Gate, although I doubt it. But we must consult the oracles and seek wisdom from the god Merkur.”

Hearing Elder Hebub’s words, Patch clasped his hands and bowed. Except with the Moon Goddess and some of the witch rituals, no one would ever call him particularly obedient or a follower who would roll over whenever someone ordered him to. But, once in a very great while, he also knew when to obey and bow his head.

“Thank you,” he said in a heartfelt voice, surprised he meant it. “And from the Moon Goddess, too, I'm sure.”

Anneliese clasped her hands. “And praise the Goddess Brigid and your god … Merkur, is it?”

“That’s why we’re called the Mystics of Merkur,” Sister Hildegard said in a way that reminded Patch of Jiro or the witch librarian Voynica Paine.
