"Hello everybody! Another week is starting and it has almost been one month since we've met!"
Another new week, a new day! The four students and one teacher started their class with an announcement.
"To commemorate, the academy has been renovated for the first time since it's opening. I have installed equipment for various crafting professions into the empty rooms, so be sure to check them out."
I did not just loaf around when they were buried in paper. I didn't have a chance when I was locked up, but now all the crafting equipment are properly in place. That took about one day and I spent the rest on deepening my understanding of the otherworldly culture.
The equipment are not the mass produced cheap models, nor are they beyond their level to handle. They are at the right level to accompany them until they are decent and can still be used thereon.
"How will you learn the professions? Well you are one week into learning the Common Language, and there is a library next door where you can find all you need. Go learn it yourself!"
They are of course, written in the Common Language so the students' faces fell as they understood. The anger, disgust and despair at the unfairness, it makes me feel so irresponsible that I like it!
"That aside, I will start teaching you how to weave spells today. The one profession I will teach you personally is Magical Inscription since it ties closely with spell casting."
Backed with sorrow and despair, the Gobs trudged on with the hope of freely wielding magic. I gave them all a list of spells including their chants and annotated for them for better understanding. I had them try out each spell one by one as I pointed out their deficiencies.
The result?
They all failed.
"Isn't it too soon to say we all failed?!"
Anyone except Alni failed to weave their mana decently, and even Alni cannot manifest the spell. It's not because of the chant was incorrect, but if anyone can weave spells just by learning a language then the world would be full of mages.
Other than an accurate pronunciation and understanding of the language, they mages also need a powerful mind for precise manipulation to bring mana into shape. It's like drawing a picture in your mind and it needs to be perfectly clear while you are giving a speech, kinda impossible without years of training.
"Then why did we have to go through all that?!"
Ah, it seems like miss Goburin is about to break down crying.
Welp, since they can't weave spells they can use the other way, that's why I'm teaching them Magic Inscription. It is a technical skill that anyone with mana can use, and though more restricted, it can be used to cast spells.
There is also the method of bashing someone with pure mana. Simple, quick and lethal, Gobuda approves!
But at the end of the day…
"Teacher, I did it."
There is only one among my students that calls me 'teacher', and that's Alni. But I am having trouble understanding what she meant.
"I can free-cast magic spells."
She spoke like it's the most natural thing ever, but it is definitely not! Didn't I say it is something that needs years of practice? That's why I prepared all the alternatives so you guys wouldn't dwell on it too much. Yet you are saying you learnt it in one day, are you nuts?
"Here, see."
She turned to the side, facing the empty field as she chanted a spell from the list I gave out yesterday. Her concentration is shown on her face as she shut out all interference to manipulate her mana. It is a state crucial for using magic, but a normal person cannot enter such a state whenever they want. Yet, she is definitely in such a state right now, and she seem awfully use to it.
"… [Fireball]"
A spell went off as I was deep in thought. It is a modified and superior version of the spell that came with level 1 <Fire Magic>.
Speaking of which, wasn't she the sole priest that single-handedly supported an entire battlefront in the stampede a month ago. Given, wanderers died many times over back then, but her well timed and accurate heals prevented the defence line from losing too many people at once.
Just how could she keep track of so many people back then? Did I overlook a little monster?
"How was it, teacher."
Ho, she asked for an evaluation with incredible confidence, not undeserved though. But right now only she can do free-casting among the four so I need to create a separate class for her…
No way I can deal with it alone. Seems like I have to call in reinforcement.
"… The special class for you will start tomorrow."
"Gobudaaaa~!!"
The reinforcement has arrived.
The one who is calling me 'Gobudaaaa' with three extra 'A's is Lirthusia, a Goblin Lord. She looks exactly like a human child in early teens, even her skin is the same colour as the humans. If not for the twin horns on her head you wouldn't think otherwise. She is dressed in flowing robes coloured in blue and white, making her look like a little fairy from heaven.
But she's acting weird…
"Waaaaa! Gobuda, save meeee!"
… Da heck.
It seems like our king Gea woke her up after leaving jail with me and immediately put her to work. Inspection and administration… eww, sounds boring, no wonder our child Lir hates it.
"Don't worry now Lir, I got a better job for you."
"R-really *hic*"
Don't judge her by her teary face. She is, I repeat, IS, a Goblin Lord, top four of the city's hierarchy. As a Seer, her senses far outstrips your average hunter and her mana sensitivity is better than even mine. She can wield the elements like breathing and directly call a storm to flatten a mountain. That's why I called her to teach the three kids except Alni the intuitive way of using magic, one that revolves around <Mana Manipulation> and <Elemental Conversion>. Once they learn it they can do flying slashes, explosive swords and ground shrink. There is no technical knowledge involved but it will greatly increase their versatility and destructive power.
"So you teach them that. In the meantime, I will teach them inscriptions and Alni magic formulas."
I told Lir of what happened over the time she was asleep, mostly about the wanderers, the academy and how the world is changing. She went to sleep because there was nothing for us to do when the world was unstable, I'd like her to stay awake as the world is about to be restored. The more she heard the more excited she became.
"So you've been personally teaching those four?"
"Yep."
"None of them left?"
"Yep."
Lir got really excited.
"They are certified nuts!"
"I know right!"
I wholeheartedly agree! It has been a month since I put them through those unreasonable lessons. The other goblins would have tried to escape me at all cost, but they are voluntarily coming for more. Does wanderers have special constitutions making them immune to despair? I swear they are enjoying it!
"So? Are you up for it?"
"Yes! I will tell Gea right away. With your words, he can't stop me!"
I laughed as she dashed off, reaching the castle wall in a blink.
