Chapter 52

Jo sighs and looks around. Now what? Her only two friends are the two archangels, and Michael was dragged away with Lucifer and Gabriel seems to be flirting with Kali. She looks around for Charlie, knowing that the lovable little geek is always up for a conversation, but she's not here, either. Great. What's she supposed to do now?

It's about a minute later that she hears a voice from behind her say, "Hey. Jo, right?"

She turns around to see Jess standing there. She gives the girl a kind smile. "Yeah. Hey, Jess. What's up?"

"Not much. I just saw you standing all alone and figured we could keep each other company 'til our boyfriends come back."

"Boyfriend?" she repeats. "You mean Michael?"

"Are you two not together?" Jess asks. "I'm sorry, I just kind of assumed. You spend so much time together..."

"Well, neither of us really have anyone else to talk to," she replies with a shrug. "But no, we're just friends. And where Sam go?"

"He's talking to... the guy with... who's the guy in the trench coat, do you know?"

"Castiel," Jo substitutes.

"Yeah, him. Sam's talking to Castiel and Dean. I kind of gave up following along."

"I don't blame you," Jo replies. "It probably doesn't make much sense because you don't know half the people they do."

"Plus, like, I don't hunt," Jess adds. "And I can only imagine how long the three of them have been hunting together."

"Well, I died on a hunt with them seven years ago, so since about then."

"You died, too?"

Jo nods. "Yeah. I went out in a fiery explosion, but I wasn't conscious to see it."

"I'm sure it looked cool, so there's that," Jess offers.

"Only plus side there is to death," Jo agrees with a joking smile.

Jess glances around the room, then asks, "Is this whole thing weird to you, too? Or are hunters kinda used to it?"

"No, it's definitely weird," Jo replies. "Not as weird as it is for you, I'm sure, because you don't know anyone but Sam, but it's still weird."

"I'm beginning to wonder if I even know Sam," Jess admits.

"What do you mean?"

"It's the whole 'hunter' thing," she explains. "I never knew about any of it."

"He just didn't want put you in danger."

"Yeah, and I get that," Jess says. "And it's not like he was hunting behind my back. He just didn't want to talk about his past, and that's fine. I can respect that. But that's who he is now, and I don't know anything about it. And I'm sorry for ranting, but I don't really have anyone to talk to, so..."

"It's fine," Jo assures her. Is this what being a normal girl is like? Gossiping about boys? If so, she could get used to this. It's nice to be somewhat normal for once. "And I get it. I'm sure it's hard for you, not really knowing anything about... well, any of this. But I'm sure it's hard on Sam, too, trying to balance his hunting life and his life with you. I'm sure if you just give it time, you'll both get used to it."

"I hope you're right..."

"If it means anything," Jo adds, "Sam is a great person. He's been through a lot, and he always seems to come out on top. You lucked out with him. And he's one of the most persistent people I've ever met. He'll make things work with you two."

"I hope you're right," Jess replies. "And now that I've had my turn to rant, you can take the floor. What's up with you and Michael? You're really not dating yet?"

"No, we're not," she replies, a slightly amused smile on her face. Is that really such a surprise?

"Why not?" Jess asks.

"Michael is one of the sweetest people I know," Jo tells her. "But he's an angel. I don't think angels are really relationship material."

"But, uh..." Jess gestures vaguely to the hallway as she attempts to think of a name. "Castiel. Castiel is dating Dean. Gabriel apparently dated Sam. Alfie and Adam seem close. I don't see why Michael's any different."

"Because..." Jo trails off. Why Michael be any different? Clearly, angels can have relationships. Shouldn't that mean angels can?

"Would you date him?" Jess asks.

Jo has to think about this for a moment. Finally, she says, "Yeah. I mean, I guess. I don't see why not. I wouldn't ask him myself, but if he asked me... Well, I don't see why I'd say no."

"I hope he does," Jess tells her. "I think you'd be cute together."

Jo scoffs. "Seriously?"

"Totally! You can't tell me you don't see it too. You guys are perfect together. Just think about it."

"I still can't picture it," Jo tells her.

"But the chemistry is clearly there! It's up to you, but if I were you, I'd want a piece of that. Just sayin'."

And even though Jo dismisses the idea aloud, it's not so easy to forget about it.
