Another Assignment

Mother looked away from her friend and wiped the potato remnants from the corner of my mouth.

"When I heard the door open, I thought it was you. I did not... could not sleep after you left, Xue", Su Na said.

I wondered how that concerned my mother and what she had just asked. Who cared if Su Na slept or not? I sure did not. [Please talk], I thought.

Mother continued to listen, she was such a gentle soul. I thought about what I would have done if I was in my mother's position. It seemed like mother was doing her best to be patient with her friend. She wanted Su to get to the point of her latest story. There was always something up with Su Na.

"He asked when I was going to leave. Xue, can you imagine that?", Su Na asked.

[Yes! Yes, I can totally imagine that. Why have you been here for so long?]. She was stalling, and it was obvious to me. I could not tell if my mother felt the same way.

"What was your response to him?", Mother asked.
