Chapter 12

Dylan planted a palm on Kimo’s leg. “Sorry. I was joking about that. I think everyone has fears. My dad says we conjure up more worry in our brains than usually happens in real life.” The snow lightened, but still fell. Dylan kept his speed low. “Tell me more of what you two texted about for almost two hours.”

“It started with her saying she was bored, and it surprised her that I was awake. She had texted friends in Portland, but no one responded. We teased, joked, she asked why I was awake.”

“You didn’t tell her what we did?”

“No. I’m not that brave. I said we shared the bed and you were a nice guy. Oh, get this, she’s twenty-eight years old. I said I want to see her driver’s license because she looks nineteen.” He sighed. “We’re both lonely a lot. She hasn’t made any friends on the coast yet, but she’s only been here a month. She lives in Florence. She asked if I had a girlfriend. I said no.”

“You don’t, do you?”
