NGSS Water Properties Writing Prompt

BrrrYCCEE

The topic which my group had was about how much water could a container contain at its max capacity and what are the reasons why it is that so this uses the elements of cohesion and adhesion. Cohesion is when the alike particles stick together, and in waters case, it is because of the hydrogen bonds between the water molecules. Cohesion is also what causes the surface tension because the surface is exposed to air the water can have stronger bonds than normal because it is bonding with fewer things. Adhesion is when different particles stick together, and for water, since it has a negative and positive pole(oxygen is negative, hydrogen is positive) it will sometimes try stick to something other than water because of these poles.

When doing the experiment first the container was filled to the brim we all started to use droppers and fill them up as much as we can whilst observing and seeing the bubble sort of shape forming on all of them, and that the containers with the smallest openings seemed to create the tallest bump. We also saw that when it breaks it only breaks a tiny bit for the container with the smallest opening it just trickles down the container, but when the container opening is very wide it has a vigorous reaction more like popping a balloon.

In this experiment, you see the cohesion in action when it all combines to form a big bubble looking thing on the surface is. One other example in which you see cohesion is on the surface of the bubble it is stronger because on surface tension which is one of the aspects on cohesion because it makes the surface stronger because it has fewer things to bond with, and this is why the container with the smaller opening got the highest. An example of adhesion in this experiment is when the surface tension braked and it trickled down the side of the container. This is an example because there is no more space in the container so it pops and spreads and since water likes to stick to things because of the poles it sticks to the container.
