GRANT HIM THE BAIL

In the early light of a new day in Accra, the city stirred to life with the rhythmic symphony of honking cars weaving through the bustling roads. Pedestrians gracefully navigated the lively streets.

Detective Philip's sleek car elegantly found its place in the police quarters, and as he stepped out, Yaw followed suit. Dressed in a crisp white casual t-shirt and snug black jeans that accentuated his sculpted physique, Philip exuded a subtle air of sophistication.

Entering the building with purpose, he navigated his way to Inspector Evans' office.

The clock had just struck 7:30, and Philip hoped the inspector would be around.

He has risen early to meticulously handle the intricacies of Jesse's bail process and hoped to find the seasoned inspector already at his post.

Fortuitously, Detective Philip encountered Inspector Evans, who had just stepped into his office. The inspector, taken aback by the detective's early presence, noted that such punctuality was a rare occurrence for Philip, who typically operated on a more relaxed schedule.

"You're here," the inspector expressed in a surprised tone. "I have something to discuss with you," Detective Philip responded.

"Take a seat, a cup of coffee?" the inspector offered. Detective Philip declined with a subtle shake of his head, opting to pull a chair and settle in for their conversation.

"I wish to secure Jesse's release," Detective Philip cut to the chase.

"Jesse?" inquired Inspector Evans with a hint of confusion.

A wry smirk adorned Detective Philip's face. "Indeed, that's what I said," he replied with a touch of sarcasm.

"Why bail him, especially considering the events of yesterday? Haven't you heard?" questioned Inspector Evans.

"What are you implying?" Detective Philip responded, a tinge of confusion clouding his expression.

"Elena didn't inform you, I presume," Inspector Evans leaned forward, assuming a more serious demeanour. "There was another inmate who met an untimely demise yesterday—a heart missing, a gruesome cut. Jesse, having spent the day with the deceased, is currently the prime suspect."

"What!" exclaimed Detective Philip. "You can't be serious. Are you suggesting he's now a suspect in two murders?"

Inspector Evans, maintaining a composed stance, stated, "I'm constrained, Philip. And why the urgency to bail him?" he inquired.

With a resigned sigh, Detective Philip rose from his seat. "I must depart. We'll speak later," he declared, leaving the office as he went back to his car with Yaw who had been standing outside of the office.

En route, Detective Philip reached out to Detective Elena, summoning her to join him at the prison. As he arrived at the imposing gates, they graciously opened to admit him, accompanied by the steady presence of Yaw.

Entering with an air of gravity, he proceeded directly to the superintendent's office. Alas, Superintendent Joe was absent. However, fortune favoured him as Elvis, having heard of the detective's arrival, approached swiftly.

"Sir," Elvis addressed the duo upon reaching them.

"Where is Jesse?" Detective Philip inquired without preamble.

"Oh, Jesse. Yesterday, he was..." Elvis began, but the detective swiftly interrupted, his tone growing serious and threatening. "I asked a simple question."

"He's at the prison hospital," Elvis responded, unsure of how to navigate the detective's intensity.

"And why the hell is he there?" Detective Philip pressed further, demanding an explanation.

Elvis, having heard of yesterday's events involving Jesse and Detective William just this morning hesitated.

"Lead the way," Detective Philip ordered, sensing Elvis's reluctance to divulge details.

Nodding, Elvis guided them to the hospital, taking them to the room where Jesse was situated. Upon entering, they found Detective William standing by the bedside, with Jesse's eyes reflecting a palpable sense of fear.

"Detective," greeted Detective William promptly upon the entrance of Detective Philip and the young man.

Ignoring the acknowledgment, Detective Philip cut straight to the point. "Why is he here?"

Detective William offered a nervous smile. "It was a regrettable mistake. I aimed to extract the truth and brought in two men to intimidate him, but it took an unfortunate turn, resulting in a physical violation."

"So, you resorted to having two men violate him for the sake of the truth?" Detective Philip queried, raising an eyebrow.

Detective William stood in awkward silence, grappling for words. Fortunately, the door swung open, revealing Detective Elena, accompanied by Joe and a prison officer who had guided them, having observed their earlier arrival at the hospital.

"What transpires in this room?" inquired Joe, scanning the surroundings and directing his attention to the downcast Jesse.

"I'm here to secure his bailing; that's what's happening," Detective Philip asserted, prompting gasps from Detective William and a resigned sigh from Elena.

"Detective, I'm afraid that's not possible. He's now a suspect in a murder case from yesterday," Joe politely interjected.

A tense atmosphere enveloped the room, leaving Yaw with an uneasy sensation. Detective Philip emitted a dark chuckle, adding a touch of cynicism to his response.

"So, if I grasp your statement correctly, you're suggesting that this man, armed by an unknown party, accompanied the inmates in a bus, committed the murder, extracted the victim's heart, and devoured it, given the absence of any concealed organ. Is that your theory?" the detective quipped with a hint of sarcasm.

Joe stuttered, taken aback by the detective's words, his gaze shifting to those with him, who were pondering on the detective's assertions.

"Listen, Superintendent, if you assert Jesse is the suspect, I can equally cast doubt on your officers. It's their responsibility to search for weapons, ensuring inmates are devoid of any threats. If Jesse is implicated, it questions the competence of your officers," Detective Philip asserted.

"Moreover, you mention a missing heart. Where is it? Did Jesse surreptitiously pass it to someone, or did he perhaps chew it, and why would he in broad daylight, resort to such a gruesome act alone? If he's a suspect, then so are your officers. However, do not categorize him as a primary or potential suspect. Release him before I pursue legal action for the physical violation he endured in your prison," the detective declared, maintaining an unwavering gaze on Joe.

Jesse sat on the bed, his anxiety palpable as his name resonated through the room, each mention causing his heart to race. Detective Philip, however, seemed undeterred.

"Detective, I comprehend your standpoint, but—"

"Sorry? Could you begin anew?" Detective Philip interjected, approaching Superintendent Joe with a deliberate and threatening stride.

"Grant him the bail, Joe," Detective William interjected abruptly, earning a bewildered look from Detective Elena.

"What he's suggesting makes sense. I hadn't considered it, and it's plausible that the young man didn't act alone. The officers could be implicated as well," Detective William reasoned.

Detective Philip's broad smile acknowledged Detective William's unexpected alignment. Turning to Jesse, who still clung to his knees with head bowed, he declared, "Discussion concluded. Let's proceed with the necessary processes to secure his release. I have other matters demanding my attention."

With that, Detective Philip exited the room, Yaw trailing behind, leaving the tension-laden space behind.
