Shade on a Sunny Day

A man raised by traitors that still has strong convictions. A what do you do when you have a dangerous power and no power with those around you. There is blood, slavers, and other topics that might not be for everyone. This is a prequel book to another book I have written but never shared. Sorry if I skip over anything, it should stand alone though.

"No, but…" I left the rest of my thoughts unsaid. Now we knew my magic bred true at least once. I wanted to protect her and be there for her, but I couldn't promise her either of those things. This hopelessness was a new feeling. I wanted to protect Isa and Bella too but how do I protect them from a child that could rip them apart without knowing what it was doing?

I held Diamond close. Bella had reached out for her when the messenger entered but I wouldn't hand her over. I took a breath and thought I need a solution to this problem. The female messenger was all well and good, but I didn't want Diamond to have people hovering over her all the time waiting for her to hurt someone. That is a terrible message to send a child. You have to be watched like a hawk because you are even more dangerous than everyone else. You are different and possibly wrong. I didn't want that, so how to fix it?

I felt Diamond shiver just a bit against my shoulder. I picked up a blanket Bella had brought down and flipped it over Diamond. A shield…

I pulled the blanket off of Diamond again and looked at it. A shield for her mothers, but what should it do? I discarded heat, and light both could be troublesome. How could I release the energy and there not be a problem? So that her mothers will not have to rely on others. Wind? Some other movement?

I looked at Diamond's back where I bounced gently, rocking her. I couldn't do that could I? Would it be dangerous? Could it take a good amount of power at once and not become dangerous?

I drew out what I was thinking on the blanket. I then wrapped the blanket around a loaf of bread and a few grapes. Now for the hard part. I touched the loaf of bread without letting any of the power go into Diamond I hit the loaf with a crazy amount of power. It was more power than I have ever put into a single strike before. I did it such that the spell would react the same as if the loaf inside the blanket had just released that much power.

Vines of power raced from the blanket and wrapped around the table lifting the blanket and everything inside up but by less than ½ a meter. The rest of the power raced higher forming what looked like a tree the vines reaching down to hold the blanket and everything wrapped in the blanket securely but not tightly.

As the tree stopped growing the blanket and it's safely wrapped fragile contents started to sway in an invisible breeze. It worked better than I had hoped. When the spell had triggered it had taken all the power and directed it down first, pushing me away from the blanket as it grew. While the tree was swaying gently it was only holding the blanket now so I could reach in and grab the loaf and grapes if I wanted.

I had not held back as I blasted the blanket and it had done a great job protecting the fabric. The tree also wasn't very big still. I sat down and picked out one of the grapes, tossing it in my mouth while I watched the tree spell.

I was happy that it would be safe. I couldn't stop a yawn as I sat. Isa got Diamond out of my hands as I shifted her to see her better. I would have complained at Isa, but she didn't take Diamond far. She was wary of the tree, but she wasn't afraid of it. "Reach out and stop it."

Isa looked at me like I had lost my mind. Bella was on my other side and her fear made it hard for me to look at her. She was still indecisive about what she was going to happen next, so I was worried about her. Vera surprised me by being the one to reach out and stop the swinging blanket.

The blanket froze where she touched it offering no resistance. I looked up at the vines. They were swaying continuing to use the power. The tree was getting smaller as it used up the blast. I could tell but it was my power that created the thing. I wasn't sure the messenger could tell it was getting smaller yet.

"Good thing you weren't going hunting tonight."

I blinked at the messenger, and he shook his head at me. Vera seemed to be thinking about the tree as she looked at it. I had made sure that the active spell glowed softly so that they could see all the vines. It was a strange looking tree. The vines glowed green if they traveled up and brown if the energy was traveling down.

There was even more to the spell. It had tried to center anything that was touching the blanket. If it couldn't include something it excluded, it. There was no parting of anything attached. It should also work if something was only partially under the blanket when it was hit with magic. It also doesn't try to gather magic but pulls in any magic that touches it.

Probably not something I wanted to handle overly much as magic leaks out of me sometimes, but the woman should be safe with it. I looked over at Bella, she was starting to settle on being mad. I had done it again, "Sorry, I just don't want any of our children to feel they are growing up monsters. They will have plenty of time to learn that later."

Bella had taken a breath to speak but I had beat her to it. She let out a huff, this wasn't over yet. Then she sighed again, and I felt her let it go. "You are going to spoil her, dear." Bella sat down next to me and curled up against me. "You can let that go, Vera. I saw what I needed to. I guess a tree that rocks her to sleep is better than trying to put out a fire."

The messenger snorted, "Even with her level of power right now fire is just one small part to worry about. Undirected or uncontrolled magic can be very dangerous and unpredictable. Mir just made something that can rip apart undirected and directed magic. It is impressive, and complex. He will also need to make many more than one for it to be very useful. That shouldn't be a problem though the making took very little magic. How long will that tree last anyway?"

"I don't know. If it continues at the same rate a day? I don't think it will use power at the same rate it should use less as it gets smaller. I think maybe three days. Guess I should have tried this somewhere else."

"Well, I don't think your brothers will care much today. How about we go see them?"

I nodded; my mind seemed to be wondering. Used too much magic again but at least I seemed to be able to stay awake now. Not sure if that is a good thing or not. I pulled the blanket from the tree. It didn't take much power and I wrapped the sleeping Diamond before handing her over to Isa. The tree was still swaying on the table, but the blanket could now make another one. "You won't be able to remove the blanket without me so I will have to make more. Lead the way, dear."
