Severed Fate

A heroic villainess, Corlissa Veronique is an anomaly herself, such a paradox is the best description of her existence. A pitiful soul forever chained to the bindings of the Villainess, she was a bug in the system, a glitch in society, a defect in the world. Memories of past lives, her own life played on repeat, that was the curse of the Villainess. Emotions never left her, she felt the suffocation of betrayal time and time again, the burning of hate, the drowning of despair, the delightful yet excruciating taste of love. Each time they turned their backs to her she felt the same emotions each and every time. It was as if she was just a marionette, obeying commands against her will as if her free-flowing string of fate that connected to her 'happily ever after' was trapped tightly in the grip of other people's hands, stretching and fraying it however they wished. She vowed to, without fail, fulfil the wishes of the previous villainess who had left the world with unmistakable anguish...and sympathy. Such empathy... "You are a person, no matter what you look like or what you do, unless you prove me otherwise I will continue to view you as who you are." Such compassion... "I wish you didn't have to suffer, I wish you could've been born into a better world." Such understanding... "Let me handle the rest, take a comfortable rest." Such selflessness... "I won't let you suffer anymore..." She truly was such an exemplary hero. --- The cover art is not mine, I found it on Google. ^^

Each year has passed meticulously forming various flawless plans that will ensure a happier future for the true kings of this empire, the commoners, the nobles of this world are ungrateful and corrupt. They exploit their power to satisfy their obnoxious greed for more wealth even though they already live a life of luxury.

I have studied data for days on end, simulating every scenario to ensure a favourable outcome, the boy I had saved 4 years ago is now in a stable position in society and they no longer have to worry about their days being numbered or whether or not they will have food the next day.

I am now 6 years old, and in 2 years I will be taking my magic awakening test but I already know the outcome of the test. I will now be starting my first plan, if everything unfolds according to the plan to which I have used their thought processes and personalities in my previous lives to determine their most likely replies. Everything has been accounted for, all that is left is to execute it.

“Isabelle, send this to Duke Veronique,” I requested of my maid.

“Young Miss, excuse my rudeness but your father lives in the same mansion as you, there is no need to send a letter because you could discuss such matters in person,” she replied, I knew this would happen, I, of course, knew that I could just discuss this with my father but it would prove to be in my favour once I send a multitude of letters to build the trust of my father.

“Yes, I know that. Anyways, send it.”

“As you wish, Young Miss.”

Father is going to be sceptical about what I wrote, but I don’t have time to meet him in person, I can’t alarm him by displaying more than I need to if we were to meet in person.

“Young Miss, it is time for dinner.”

“Very well, I will be heading there shortly,” he must’ve read it by now, he’s either going to ask about it or act like he never received it.

As I entered the dining room, where it was evident that my parents had slight discord with one another but were erecting a façade, my father’s eyes instantly held a doubtful gaze. He was inspecting all my movements, scanning for anything suspicious. The rest of the meal was held in silence until my mother decided to make herself look like a proper mother.

“Corlissa, you need some new dresses, all the dresses that you have picked are cheap and plain. How about you go shopping with me for new dresses?” her voice was phony and fake, she just wanted to use me as an excuse to get more money to waste.

“Pardon my vulgar words but, I find no enjoyment in wasting money on worthless materialistic items that will bring no true joy to a person nor do I find value in using money to build a useless façade when that wealth could be better spent on more worthwhile causes. Though I do have some compassion despite my cold words, do not fret for I have already expected for you to be unable to comprehend my words as you are just like all the other nobles that are blinded by greed for wealth and are ungrateful for the privileged life that you have already been given.”

Mother looked furious, she then slammed her hand down onto the table causing the plates to clatter, “You- You! Despicable child! What would you know?! You’re just a-!”

“It appears that I have struck a nerve, but don’t worry, I do not wish to engage in petty fights that noble ladies at worthless tea parties appear to be quite fond of. I will see myself out.”

I then left the dining hall and returned to my room. This was not part of the plan, I had accidentally let my emotions take control of my actions and caused another variable that needs to be taken into account when calculating the response of the duke.

According to my calculations using the data from my past lives, he would send a shadow guard with higher ability than the one that he sent at the festival, he would ensure that the guard he assigns would have magic that allows their presence to be concealed and would report anything that I do back to him.

It turns out I was correct, the very next day I felt a change in the air from the shadows of my room, I couldn’t react though otherwise it would bring up too much suspicion for a young child to have sensed an experienced shadow guard. Since the guard was there I thought that I might as well write another letter, the topics I cover in the letters all vary, the first one I sent was about the issues in society. This one outlines potential solutions but also hinted towards different applications of existing medicines to cure more health issues.

“Isabelle.”

“Yes, young miss?”

“Send this letter to the Duke. I will be going somewhere but I won’t be leaving the estate, you don’t need to follow me later.”

Isabelle took the letter and then left. I wonder if there is anything fun to do, I want to experience something resembling childhood and let go of my responsibilities for a while. I then headed down to the training grounds of the knights.

The training ground was behind the mansion, it had a separate gate lined with a stone wall and consisted of a large packed-dirt circle surrounded by various training equipment lining the edge of the circle. The head knight was standing with his back facing the entrance keeping watch to ensure that none of the guards was slacking off.

Either he couldn’t sense that I was walking towards him or he wasn’t bothered to deal with me at the moment, I believe it is the latter. Since I won’t have magic I should prepare and build all my other skills, I’m already here at the training ground so I might as well test my compatibility with the sword.
