He stood in front of Jack when Jack leaned against the wall. “Why?”
“Why wh—”
“Why does it scare you?” Mason shook his head. “I don’t understand.”
Jack paused, his face turned to the floor, his fingers squeezing the envelope as if he was trying to drain something from the paper. His reply was so quiet, Mason barely heard it. “I don’t know.”
Mason frowned, trying to catch Jack’s eyes and being denied time and again. “You don’t seem the type,” he said finally. He didn’t finish the sentence until Jack looked up with a frown. “To be afraid of something that you don’t know.” Mason smiled. “I thought I had dibs on that kind of foolishness.”
“I like you.”
