Turning Tides

Eleanor's heart raced as she and Rosa locked gaze for minutes. There she was, the woman who had once meant everything to her, now just a distant figure, like a mere stranger. She hesitated for a moment, unsure of whether to say something or simply walk away.

"Hey," Rosa finally spoke, breaking the silence.

"Hey," Eleanor replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

Rosa's eyes softened as she took in Eleanor's appearance. "It's been a while."

"Yeah, it has," Eleanor agreed, feeling a lump forming in her throat.

"How have you been?" Rosa asked, her voice filled with genuine concern.

Eleanor hesitated, unsure of how she has really been. "I've been... okay. Busy with work and stuff."

Rosa nodded, seeming to understand. "And how's everything else? Your family, friends..."

"They're... fine," Eleanor replied vaguely, avoiding Rosa's gaze. "I heard you got a job offer abroad," she said, her voice tinged with curiosity. "Are you back now?"

Rosa shook her head, her smile faltering slightly. "No, just for the holidays. I have some time off, so I thought I should come home a bit."

They fell into an easy rhythm as they walked, catching up on each other's lives and reminiscing about old times. But as they neared a quiet café, Eleanor felt a knot forming in her stomach. She knew there was something she needed to ask Rosa, something she had been avoiding ever since they first met again.

"So," she began hesitantly, "I was wondering... about us....Maybe we could try again."

Rosa's smile faded, her expression turning serious. "Eleanor, I'm not really sure about that, you know how we ended, I don't want to go through that again" she said gently. "What we had... it's in the past. I've moved on."

Eleanor's heart sank at the words, a pang of sadness shooting through her chest. "Moved on?" she echoed, her voice barely above a whisper.

Rosa nodded, her gaze steady. "Yes. I have someone else now and we're planning on getting married soon."

Eleanor felt as if the ground had been ripped out from under her feet. She had always known that there was a chance Rosa had moved on, but hearing it confirmed was like a knife to the heart.

"I see," she said, forcing a smile onto her face. "I'm happy for you, Rosa. Truly."

But inside, her heart was breaking. She had held onto the hope that maybe, just maybe, they could find their way back to each other. But now, faced with the reality, she knew that their chance had slipped away forever.

"Yeah, thanks and you should too... Do you mean that ever since we broke up, you haven't met anyone else?" Rosa asked, staring deeply at her.

Eleanor's heart sank as the conversation back to her own relationship. She stumbled over her words, unable to form a coherent response. How could she explain the mess that her own love life had become?

"I... I don't know," she finally managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper. "Things are complicated."

Rosa studied her for a moment, her gaze searching. "Complicated how?" she asked softly.

Eleanor bit her lip. "I... I've been seeing someone," she admitted, her voice tinged with uncertainty. "But it's... complicated."

Rosa nodded. "I see," she said quietly.

"But Eleanor, you can't keep hiding from your own feelings. You deserve to be happy, to be true to yourself."

Eleanor felt a lump forming in her throat at her words. She knew that Rosa was right, that she couldn't continue to live a lie. But the thought of confronting her own feelings, of facing the truth head-on, was terrifying.

"I know," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "But it's not that simple."

Rosa reached out to touch her arm, her touch gentle. "It never is," she said softly. "But you owe it to yourself to try. Don't let fear hold you back. You deserve to find happiness, whatever that may look like."

Eleanor felt tears pricking at the corners of her eyes as she looked into Rosa's gaze. She knew she was right, that she couldn't continue to hide from her own feelings. Rosa bade her goodbye and disappeared into the street as she found her way back home, her heart heavy and broken.

As she drove back home after her seeing Rosa, her mind was swirling with a mix of emotions. Lost in thought, her phone suddenly rang, startling her out of her reverie. It was Greg, his voice warm and concerned as he asked how she was doing.

"Hey, Eleanor, just wanted to check in on you. Haven't heard from you since you left. Everything okay?"

Eleanor appreciated Greg's gesture, feeling a sense of comfort in his concern. Despite the chaos of her thoughts, she managed a small smile as she responded, "Hey, thanks for reaching out. Yeah, I'm okay, just had a lot of work to do."

Greg's tone remained gentle as he replied, "I get it. Well, if you ever need to talk or if there's anything I can do, just let me know. I'm here for you."

Eleanor felt a wave of gratitude wash over her at his offer of support. "Thanks, Greg, I appreciate that. It means a lot."

After exchanging a few more words, they said their goodbyes, and Eleanor continued her journey back to the city, feeling slightly lighter knowing that someone cared enough to reach out.

As she dropped the call, a text came in from Whitney.

"Hey I miss you...can I come over to your place, let's talk"

Eleanor's heart skipped a beat as she read the message. Mixed emotions surged within her, a tumultuous blend of longing and apprehension. She wanted desperately to see her.

Taking a deep breath, she composed her reply, her fingers trembling slightly as she typed out her response.

"Hey.... I miss you too. Yeah, you can come over in an hour."

Sending the message, Eleanor felt a flutter of anticipation mingled with anxiety.

As soon as she got home, she tidied up her apartment, lighting a few scented candles to create a warm ambiance. She changed into a comfortable yet stylish outfit, wanting to look presentable but not overdressed. As she waited for Whitney, she arranged some snacks and drinks on the coffee table, trying to create a relaxed atmosphere for their conversation. In less than an hour, there was a light knock on the door.

Eleanor unlocked the door, anticipation tingling through her as she greeted Whitney warmly.

"Hey, thanks for coming over," Eleanor said, her voice soft with relief.

Whitney smiled back, her eyes reflecting sincerity. "Hey. Thanks for having me. I've missed you."

"I've missed you too," Eleanor admitted, leading the way into the living room. "I'm glad you're here."

"Yeah, me too," Whitney agreed, settling onto the couch.

Eleanor sat beside her, and began "Look, about the...last time... I'm really sorry about that... I didn't replace you, never will...he's just someone I knew before we met and I've not really said anything about being in a relationship with him."

"It's okay... It's fine. But I was just really jealous and hurt." Whitney said, nodding understandingly.

"I know, and I'm sorry for making you feel that way," Eleanor replied, her voice laced with regret. "I will do better."

"It's okay. We both have our flaws. But we need to work through them together." Whitney reached out, gently squeezing Eleanor's hand.

Agreeing, Eleanor added, "I want to be better for you."

Whitney's heart swelled with affection. "And I want to be better for you too. I care about you a lot."

Their eyes met, a silent understanding passing between them.

"So, where do we go from here?" Whitney asked, breaking the moment.

"I think we need to communicate more openly and honestly with each other," Eleanor suggested. "And we need to be there for each other, no matter what.

"So, can I get you something to drink?" Eleanor offered, eager to ease any remaining tension.

 Whitney's smile widened."Yeah, sure."

"Of course. I'll be right back," Eleanor replied, heading to the kitchen with a renewed sense of hope.

She returned with drinks, their eyes met once more, a silent understanding passing between them. Without a word, Whitney leaned in, closing the gap between them, and their lips met in a soft, tender kiss.

Eleanor broke the kiss suddenly leaving Whitney surprised.

"But.... Let's hop in the shower first. I'm a bit sweaty"

"Alright." Whitney said with a huge smile on her face.
