One’s abilities determine one’s position in the hierarchy of power and influence. Such were the societal situations of Mythical Meadows. The genders were treated near equally, and a person was not judged because of their parents’ wrong-doings.
But being a sheen or being born to one gave others the right to mock and bully, it seemed. That is what Anastasia had learned when she had been naught but a young child.
Perhaps this hierarchy was based on the notion of the goddess’ blessings. A sorcerer stood highest on this vertical distribution, for they were believed to be preferable to Goddess Alûr. The stronger a sorcerer was, the more of the goddess’ favor they held. Much on the contrary, sheens were the cursed ones—souls who were repaying the foul deeds of some previous lifetime. It was perhaps because of this belief that the unfair treatment the others gave to sheens didn’t weigh down on their conscience.
