The conversation was recorded, and Carl was very aware that, though both he and the lieutenant preserved the pretense of civility and complete cooperation, the lieutenant was no doubt considering doing a brain scan on Carl, to wring out allof the information from him.
Carl had the feeling that the lieutenant was just about to order a probe brought in, when the door of the interrogation cell opened and Senator Peel entered.
Both the other men stood up. The lieutenant saluted, but Carl did not, knowing he was not a current member of the Time Corps, that his status was indeterminate. The senator spoke briefly and quietly to the lieutenant, who nodded, saluted, and left the room.
When they were alone, the senator unfastened the restraints on Carl’s wrists and ankles, then pulled the interrogator’s chair closer to Carl’s and, leaning forward, patted him on the knee.
