“God! It’s good to see you again, Carl!” And then, to Carl’s surprise, the bigger man pulled him into a tight but surprisingly tender hug.
In that moment Carl remembered the sense of having been kissed. It had the same quality: masterful yet tender. He found the experience disorienting, but far from unpleasant.
They were out the door before Carl could orient himself to the situation. Everything seemed to be moving too fast.
Did he even wantto be rescued?
On the one hand, he felt touched that Todd was risking his life to attempt the rescue—more touched, in fact, than he was strictly comfortable with. And he felt honored as well; he’d never imagined that one cadet would be that valuable to the Corps.
