Chapter 66

Bredret stumbled down the street as he almost lost his balance. He felt he had held himself together long enough and since no one was around he could finally relax a bit. The smell of liquor was heavy on his breath as he placed his arm against the side of a building in order to steady himself. He was not certain how long he had been out drinking until he caught wind of Vorbuk and Chete. If they had realized how heavily he had already drowned his inner sorrows perhaps they may have never let him go off alone. Without a care a faint laugh escaped him as he placed his forehead against his arm where it was resting.

As die hard as he may come off to others around him nobody truly ever saw Bredret at his worst. The truth behind the man was that he held a heavy burden that he carried with his heart every day. It was a burden that as much as it pained him he would never regret his own choices in his life and was sure he would still carry that pain with him. The reason he accepted the pain so wholeheartedly every day was because it gave him something important that he felt he could never live without. Regardless of how much he accepted and lived with it though did not erase the hatred he felt every time he had to come in contact with that cambion, Chete. The mere sight of the man was enough to rouse every emotion inside himself that he thought he had suppressed; for her sake.

"Celeste?" He asked even though he could sense her clearly.

Lifting his head up to turn around he could see the spiritual form of Celeste floating through the air towards him. Her transparent arms carefully wrapping their way around his neck as she gazed longingly into his eyes. She could see how torn the man she loved so deeply was feeling in front of her and it only made her wish she could truly hold him once more. The fake smile that he put on for her sake looked warm but everything behind his eyes was screaming at her that he was in pain and simply trying to cover it up for her sake.

"Can I ask you something that's bothered me for a long time? I know you can't really answer me with words but I must ask you.. Do you ever regret the choice you made back then?" Bredret could not look at her directly as the words left his mouth. He did not like to look weak in front of others but when it came to Celeste that crazy brute always felt weak as a mouse inside.

Celeste felt like panicking as she tried to get his attention by making all sorts of movements in the air with her hands. The stubborn dragon refused to look at her though out of fear of how she would really respond to him if she was able to speak. Gliding through the air until her body was in front of him she glared up into his eyes silently. No words needed to be spoken for him to know that she was trying to refute the idea that she would regret her choices she made when she was alive to be with him. She had gave up so much in life to be with Bredret and no matter what in her mind if she had to relive it she would do it all again in order to be with the dragon.

A faint but true smile slowly found its way onto his face as he gazed down into her eyes where her spirit stood. The faint light emitting from her body illuminating the two of them made them look picture perfect to any eyes that landed on them. Warmth filled his beating chest as he wished for one more day where he could actually touch his beloved Celeste. Whether or not she truly would give up everything again for him he already knew in his own heart that he would do so himself. Even if he had to defy the heavens itself he would give his everything to just feel her warmth once more against him.

Quiet giggling could be heard from her spirit as it was the only faint sound that was ever able to be heard from her soul when she was full of happiness but it was enough to soothe his longing; just enough so that he would not do anything rash. It was not just him, however, because she too wished at times that she could still experience all those things that the living could with him. When she was simply a spirit in her afterlife how could she not wonder at times over the little things. Bredret was still alive and had a long future ahead of him as long as he lived a proper life. Yet, instead of finding himself someone and falling in love with them while they were alive and raising a family he was willing to stand so firmly beside her as a spirit and still consider her everything to him.

If she could voice out her own opinion to him she probably would have turned the question around and asked him right there where they stood if he regretted being with her since she could never give him the things a living girl could. Before she even realized what she was doing the palm of her hand had already slid over her stomach as she wondered what life could have been like with him if things had turned out differently for them.

"I know what you're thinking, but don't." Bredret rejected the motion that she was making. He could tell right away what she was worrying about since she had bound herself to him until the day of his death.

Celeste wanted to respond to him but couldn't so she only waved her hands in the air innocently as if she had not thought of anything. Not wanting to worry him she pushed the thought away and was about to move but her spiritual form slowly floated backwards until her back was close to the wall of the building. Bredret was towering over her with one arm against the wall as he gazed down into her eyes. If she still had a heart beat she knew herself that it would have began to pound wildly in her chest as she returned his gaze.

"I need no kin, Celeste. The only thing I need in my life is you regardless of your form and regardless of what you can or can not give me. Be it in life or in death; as long as you're by my side you make me complete." Bredret spoke as he desired her badly with every fiber of his being. Knowing that he could never physically touch her he still leaned in close to her causing her to close her eyes and lean slightly forward as well. With his lips just grazing gently against hers, though they could not physically touch, they could both still feel a faint warmth in their hearts as they could still recall in their memories the sensation of what was once possible and for them it was enough.
