As the New Year's bells were about to ring, the school began preparations for the annual New Year's Gala. The homeroom teacher, Mike, considering everyone was busy preparing for exams, announced that participation in the event was not mandatory. This decision brought relief to many students, but some had their minds on other things.
Anna, still harboring resentment because Kit refused to marry into the Gu family in her place, held this grudge close. During lunch, she invited Jenny to eat at the cafeteria, hoping to stir up more trouble.
"Hey, Jenny, did you sign up for the gala this year?" Anna asked with a sly glint in her eyes. "I remember your dance performance last year was amazing. I heard my sister used to love dancing too, but unfortunately, our family was too poor to afford lessons."
Jenny, basking in Anna's praise, felt her pride swell. She lifted her chin slightly, a confident smile on her face. "I was planning to focus on studying, but if you want to see it, I can spare some time to practice. It's not that hard."
Anna's smile grew brighter, her eyes flashing with mischief. "Really? It's too bad you don't have extra time, or else my sister would definitely ask you to teach her."
Jenny, known for her talents in class, felt a surge of irritation at Anna's instigation. She sneered, her tone sharp, "With her skills, even a god couldn't teach her."
"With your mediocre skills, Kit wouldn't want you as a teacher," Kalvin and a few classmates from Class F entered, overhearing the conversation. Kalvin frowned, his tone dripping with disdain.
Jenny's face turned ashen with anger, her fists clenched tightly, her voice trembling, "You! You!"
"No, no, Jenny didn't mean any harm; she was just joking," Anna quickly interjected, her voice gentle but her eyes cold.
"Oh, it's you, Anna the White Lotus," Kalvin said, not hiding his contempt. "You talk bad about others, aren't you afraid that one day someone will talk bad about you?"
Anna's expression changed slightly, but she maintained her gentle facade, lowering her gaze. "Kalvin, you misunderstand. We were just chatting casually, there was no ill intent."
"Chatting casually? Anna, your idea of casual chat is quite interesting," Kalvin retorted with a cold smile, his eyes full of disdain. "True talent doesn't need to belittle others to stand out."
Jenny, left speechless by his words, looked even more upset. Anna, seeing this, could only force a smile and say no more.
After the cafeteria altercation, Kalvin couldn't stop thinking about Kit. He got her a meal and brought it to her seat.
"Kit, do you want to sign up for the New Year's Gala?" Kalvin asked, his eyes filled with anticipation.
Kit shook her head without hesitation, her gaze firm, "No, I don't want to participate."
Kalvin frowned, feeling a bit anxious. He leaned closer, his tone soft yet urgent, "How about singing? Dancing? Playing the piano? Reciting? You must be good at something."
Kit, annoyed by his persistence, frowned, "Kalvin, why do you insist on me signing up?"
Kalvin paused, then recounted the cafeteria incident in detail. After hearing it, Kit simply said, "Don't worry about it."
Kalvin, still uneasy, sighed and said, "But if you change your mind, let me know."
Jenny, returning from the cafeteria with a smug smile, glanced at Kit deliberately. Kit, understanding her intentions, ignored her and looked out the window, her gaze calm and determined.
Kalvin, noticing Jenny's attitude, felt dissatisfied and coldly remarked, "Jenny, don't think you're all that just because you learned some dance. There's always someone better."
Jenny didn't argue back this time, merely smirking arrogantly.
Kalvin, clenching his fists, felt indignant on Kit's behalf but chose to hold back, knowing Kit had her own plans. Kit, sensing Kalvin's emotions, gently patted his hand, indicating he shouldn't worry.
"Kit, are you really not planning to participate in the gala?" Kalvin asked again, hopeful.
Kit didn't answer, just shook her head to indicate her refusal.
Kalvin nodded, still worried but choosing to trust Kit, "Alright, I trust you."
Jenny, seeing this, felt even more pleased, believing Kit was too scared to participate in the gala. She felt her plan was working perfectly.
