Both of them knew the truth: Slime Monster, for all his power, could never convince the villagers to follow him out of the stone forest. His grotesque, jelly-like form; alien and unsettling, would always be a barrier between them. Fear and mistrust ran deep, and the villagers would never see him as a protector, only as another monster lurking in the shadows.
But James was different. He looked human, spoke like one, and moved with the confidence of someone who belonged in their world. With his face hidden behind a simple mask, he could blend in seamlessly. The villagers wouldn't suspect his true nature, making him the ideal guide to lead them to safety.
".I.won't.let.you.help.me.for.nothing." Slime Monster's voice trembled, each word stretched with an emotion that was almost childlike in its hopefulness. Seeing James agree to his request made him visibly shake with joy, his gooey form quivering with excitement.
James raised an eyebrow, an amused smile playing on his lips as he gave Slime Monster a friendly pat. "Come on, we're brothers, aren't we? Since when is a favor free between brothers? Besides," he grinned, his eyes glinting with mischief, "what's in it for me?"
Slime Monster's two floating eyeballs did an exaggerated roll, his makeshift attempt at human expression. ".You. Said. You. Wanted. Spirit. Crystals."
Slime Monster explained that at the far end of the dungeon lay a strange machine powered by a mine of spirit crystals. This source was what kept the dungeon's defenses and essential systems running. The energy within the spirit crystal mine attracted alien species, some of whom had made it their territory. These weren't just ordinary creatures either, they were powerful, F-grade elites. But Slime Monster spoke with a certainty that left no room for doubt. He was confident that James could handle them.
James listened carefully, nodding as Slime Monster outlined the setup. He wasn't surprised to hear that other creatures had gathered around the mine; spirit crystals radiated a potent energy, valuable even to those who couldn't wield Aura. But the mention of the strange device intrigued him.
"A spirit crystal mine, huh?" James's eyes narrowed, thoughts racing. "If there's something that valuable down here, I'll have to see it for myself."
He knew that the mine had likely been heavily used, meaning most of the spirit crystals would already be extracted. But where there were alien species still lurking, there would surely be spirit crystals left to claim.
He shot Slime Monster a sly look. "Aren't you worried I'll just take all the spirit crystals for myself and leave the dungeon defenseless?" He jabbed Slime Monster playfully, a teasing edge to his tone.
Slime Monster shook his head, the motion causing his form to ripple. ".I.still.have.common.sense." His voice was calm, almost amused, as if James's idea was beyond absurd. "Even with tools, humans can't drain a spirit crystal mine completely… and we're far from human."
James chuckled, impressed by Slime Monster's confidence. "Fair enough." He watched as Slime Monster began to gather himself, the jelly creature turning back toward the stone forest.
".I'm.going.to.prepare.food.for.the.villagers," Slime Monster said, his voice soft but determined. ".When.you're.done.with.the.mine…come.find.me."
With that, Slime Monster vanished into the maze of stalactites, his form shimmering as it melted into the shadows. James watched him go, a grin spreading across his face as he hefted his scythe onto his shoulder. "Heh, you trust me that much, huh? What if I decide to double-cross you?" he called after him, chuckling to himself. "Guess I'll just do some… light work, then."
Humming a tune under his breath, James set off toward the location Slime Monster had marked, anticipation sparking within him.
…
The journey through the stone forest brought him to a small, inconspicuous cave. But as he ventured inside, the cramped tunnel opened into a vast, awe-inspiring cavern. All around him, faintly glowing spirit crystal formations jutted from the walls and floor, casting an ethereal blue light across the chamber. The air was thick with energy, the kind that made his skin prickle and his Aura buzz with anticipation.
"So, this is the mineral mine," he murmured, eyes scanning the cave.
A sudden roar echoed from across the chamber. James's gaze snapped to a rough stone outcropping embedded with spirit crystals. Perched atop it was a massive, snow-white leopard, its fur shimmering faintly under the cave's light. The creature's eyes blazed as it fixed its gaze on him, its stance fierce and territorial.
"Tsk," James smirked, unphased by the creature's display. "A big kitty, huh? You're in the wrong place if you think you can scare me."
Just as he sized up the leopard, a rustling sound above caught his attention. Instinctively, he leaped into the air, just as a massive black spider the size of a boulder dropped from the ceiling, slamming into the ground where he'd stood a second before.
Mid-air, James twisted, scanning his surroundings. But his respite was short-lived; from the darkness, a pair of claws shot toward him, aiming for his back. He spun just in time, catching sight of a monstrous bat diving at him, its fanged maw wide open.
Without missing a beat, James's leg shot out, driving his foot into the creature's belly with a powerful kick. The force sent the bat careening backward, screeching in pain, and allowed him to redirect his momentum, landing smoothly on the cave floor.
As he straightened, he felt his Aura surge, the thrill of battle awakening his senses. He gripped his scythe, his eyes darting from the leopard to the spider and then to the bat circling above. The cavern was alive with enemies, each one more ferocious than the last.
"Well, this is going to be fun," he muttered, a grin breaking across his face. His fingers tightened around the scythe's handle, anticipation coursing through him.
With a single fluid motion, he launched himself forward, meeting the leopard's snarl with a battle cry of his own. This was the thrill he craved; the clash of power, the surge of adrenaline, and the promise of spirit crystals waiting at the end of his path.
As the creatures lunged toward him from all sides, James knew that every strike, every dodge, every ounce of effort would bring him closer to the power he sought. And as he swung his scythe in a deadly arc, the glow of spirit crystals illuminated his fierce grin, a reminder of the rewards he'd claim after this brutal dance was over.
Whoosh!
Without warning, a massive stone club, easily thicker than James's height, erupted from the ground like a battering ram, aiming straight for him. There was nothing delicate or refined about the attack; it was pure, raw power. Caught mid-air, James barely had a second to react before the giant stone club slammed into him, sending him hurtling backward. He crashed against the jagged stone wall of the mine with a sickening thud, fragments of rock scattering around him.
A towering figure emerged from the shadows, its muscular frame dwarfing everything around it. It was a massive chimpanzee, holding the colossal stone club with ease, a triumphant gleam in its eyes as it beat its chest and let out a booming roar.
"ROOOAR!" The sound echoed through the cavern, each beat of its chest a display of raw dominance.
But the victory was premature. From the rubble, James's hand pushed a slab of stone aside, and he rose, shaking dust and gravel from his clothes as if he'd just brushed off a minor inconvenience.
He eyed the chimpanzee and its three companions scattered across the cavern, with an unsettling, crimson gleam in his gaze. He cracked his neck, rolling his shoulders as a grin stretched across his face. "Quite the welcome party you've thrown for me," he sneered. "But if you think that little love tap did anything more than scratch my coat, you're in for a surprise."
The chimpanzee's smugness faltered slightly, but it stood its ground, gripping its club with renewed determination.
James extended his hand, and in a flash, a silver-black scythe materialized, shimmering ominously in his grip. Its edges seemed to drink in the light, casting a deadly glow across the cave.
"Thirst for life… Transform into night," he murmured, his voice like a whispered incantation.
In an instant, a dark aura enveloped him, wrapping around his form like living shadows. The surge of power flooded through him, invigorating every muscle, amplifying his senses, and setting his pulse alight with a fierce, primal hunger.
He chuckled, the sound low and menacing, his eyes gleaming with a bloodlust that made the alien beasts shift uncomfortably. "Alright, let's see what you've got," he taunted. And with that, his figure blurred, vanishing from their sight.
Roar!? Ouch!? Squeak!?
The four alien creatures exchanged panicked looks, their heads darting around the cavern, trying to locate him. The air grew tense, each of them straining to catch a glimpse of movement in the shadows.
Suddenly, a cold voice echoed from the darkness.
"One."
A deadly scythe slashed out of the shadows, cutting through the dim glow of the cave as it streaked toward the chimpanzee's chest. Startled, the giant ape scrambled to lift its stone club, desperately trying to block the strike.
But the scythe was relentless. The moment it met the stone club, it sliced clean through, shearing the weapon in half as if it were nothing but paper. The chimpanzee's eyes widened in terror as the scythe continued its arc, piercing straight through its chest. The sharp, wicked tip of the blade emerged from the beast's back, slick with blood.
The scythe didn't stop there. With a violent twist, James yanked it sideways, slicing through flesh, muscle, and bone. The blade exited beneath the chimpanzee's left arm, leaving a trail of exposed ribs and a gruesome, gaping wound.
The chimpanzee staggered, its massive frame collapsing to the ground in a pool of blood. Its life force was astounding; it should've been dead, but sheer will kept it clinging to life. It whimpered, dragging its broken body toward its companions, a desperate, pained look in its eyes as if pleading for help.
But James wasn't done. In a blur of motion, he appeared at the fallen creature's side, the scythe glinting as he raised it high. The chimpanzee's eyes widened in fear, understanding its end was near.
With a swift, merciless slash, the scythe came down. Blood spurted out in a crimson fountain, splattering across the cavern and onto the other three creatures watching in horror.

James calmly wiped his face, smearing away the blood splatters with the back of his hand, a twisted grin tugging at his lips. He swung the scythe, letting the excess blood drip to the ground with a casual flick.
"Well then, big cats," he called out, his voice mocking. "What are you waiting for? Aren't you going to avenge your friend?"
The three remaining creatures, a hulking panther, a skittering spider with deadly fangs, and a snarling bat hanging from the ceiling; shifted uneasily, their confidence visibly shaken by the grisly fate of the chimpanzee.
James laughed darkly, twirling his scythe with ease. "If you're too scared to come to me…" he said, his tone taunting, "then I suppose I'll just have to come to you."
He took a slow step forward, then another, each one calculated, each one filled with deadly intent. The creatures hissed, growled, and screeched, but they did not back down. He could see their instinct to fight warring with their fear, and it thrilled him.
"Come on," he whispered, his eyes blazing as he broke into a run, scythe raised, ready to unleash chaos. "Show me what you've got!"
And with that, the cavern erupted into a deadly dance of shadows and blood.
