Claire stiffened, her gaze lowering to her flat stomach. "I haven't been pregnant for long, how do you know?"
Sighing, Claire sat back on the bed, striking up a conversation with the woman beside her in a soft voice. When Claire asked about the medicine, the woman couldn't hide her proud expression.
"I'm the only doctor in this village," she said. "But the medical skills I use are... unconventional. That's why I was driven out of the village. You're lucky to have met me; otherwise, your child might've been lost last night."
"In fact, that man isn't my man. I was kidnapped by him," Claire said gently, her tone like a gurgling stream. But the woman remained unimpressed, waving her hand dismissively.
"Your affairs don't concern me. He brought me back to the village, so he's my benefactor. I only listen to him. You should stay put, or I don't mind letting you try my other secret medicine."
