Chapter 48

The light from all around began to dim the deeper that Chi delved into the trees. It was not surprising to Chi as he had learnt to accept a great number of things when it came to being in Numen's Garden. He could hear loud creaking noises from the trees as if they were being shoved about. Chirping from the usher above loudly trying to get his attention. When it realized that Chi was not paying attention it quickly climbed down and stood beside him. Shifting into its larger form as it flipped its head around in order to survey the area.

"What's gotten into you?" Chi asked it while trying to find what the usher was looking at. There was nothing that seemed out of the ordinary to him. Not understanding the actions of the usher he chose to continue his exploration.

Keeping its large form the white fox followed Chi from behind. Its tail and ears high as it kept guard up against the surroundings. Feeling uneasy the beast refused to drop its focus for even a moment. Though with nothing going on that Chi could pick up himself the man remained unfazed by the usher's actions. Thinking it was simply playing around he did not so much as cast the fox a second glance.

BAM!

The silence around them was broken as something long slammed into the earth before them. It was black and seemed to have a sharp point to the end of it as it slowly lifted upwards from the ground. Dirt falling away as it moved. The sight was enough to send a cold sweat down Chi's back as he watched it. His gaze following it to find what it was connected to.

In front of Chi and the large white usher stood a black widow. Her body reaching at least forty feet in height. A large red hourglass painted on her back. As it stood there in front of them with its sight focused on them it released a loud shriek that almost sounded as if it was trying to hiss. Its actions causing the usher beside Chi to growl out defensively.

Grabbing hold of his silver sword tight he held it in front of him in a defensive stance that Tyson had taught him. He had yet to defend himself against anything on his own because Fae and Tyson had always been there for him. Sweat dripping from how nervous he felt to be on his own fell onto the steel sword from his hands. If he ran he was not sure he could evade such a large creature on his own if it chose to come after him. The only thing he felt he could do was find a way to withstand it himself until someone came for him.

"Until someone else comes, huh? I'm still counting on them when they aren't even here.." Chi laughed at himself for thinking of such a crazy idea.

He was not sure if anyone would even come to look for him at all and yet his mind was still holding out hope that Tyson would come running for him. All his painful training he'd gone through had been for him to defend himself if the need arose because they would not always be there to coddle him and yet he'd allowed himself to grow use to always depending on them. He was not willing to let himself be seen as such a useless person when Tyson was always putting himself on the line for his sake.

"We're on our own this time." Chi said as he glanced over at the large white usher beside him. The beast growling fiercely as it kept the giant black widow within its sight. Realizing now that the fox had been sensing the creature that now stood before them.

The usher rushed forward after the black widow. Her massive legs repeatedly nailing themselves deep into the earth as she tried to pierce them through the usher. Every time her large body would slam against the trees they would be sent toppling over and crashing into the ground. Seeing that Chi was there was well she sent one of her pointed legs straight for him.

Sword in his hand he jumped out of the way of the oncoming black widow's leg. Just hardly escaping the leg he could feel dirt being tossed against his body as it quickly dove deep into the ground beside him. Lifting back out only to come barreling towards him once more. The movements of the black widow were so fierce that he could feel the earth quaking beneath his feet. It felt like the only thing he could do against the black widow was dodge her every movement because her speed was beyond him. Her shrilling voice making his ear drums feel as if they would burst.

Glancing over he could see the white usher sinking its own fangs into one of the black widow's legs. Pulling and tugging at it with all its might. Taking the momentary distraction the white fox was giving him Chi rushed forward. Doing his best to dodge every oncoming stab from the widow's legs. Just before Chi could make it close enough to the body of the black widow to make a move he found himself being slammed into sideways from the black widow sweeping one of her legs from the side.

Body sent flying to the side, Chi found himself rolling across the ground. Losing his grip on the sword as he was sent flying it had fallen beneath the giant black widow. Everything felt like it was spinning by the time he'd realized what had happened to himself. The large white usher still rushing from leg to leg as it struggled against her. Each leg of the black widow was so thick and heavy that the usher's teeth could not leave so much as a scratch.

"Damn.." Chi muttered under his breath as he struggled to regain himself. Trying to find a way to make it over to the sword he could see no other way then making a run for it. He did not feel as if he could afford to lose the weapon right there. It was the only thing he had to make himself seem useful in the slightest and gave him a chance to keep up with the others. If he turned and ran he felt as if it would only make it seem worse to the others.

Struggling to his feet Chi found himself at another dead run towards the black widow.
