“Exactly.” She rose from the desk, walked to one side of the room, and opened a door. “The file room’s right in here, and there’s a nice little chair and table you can use.”
In the file room, she pointed him at a very old-fashioned looking file cabinet. “The paperwork for each funeral is in a Kraft envelope, and the envelopes are organized by year, so help yourself.”
“Thank you, ma’am,” he said.
It took most of the morning, but Carlton managed to find files for every member of the Raleigh family that was buried in the mausoleum on the property, up to, and including Moses. Mrs. Howard came into the room just as he was finishing.
“How’s it going?” she said.
“I found everything I was looking for,” he said, “and it makes great reading. All I need now are copies of everything. If you have a copy machine, I’ll gladly pay you for copies.”
