intro

My name is Cynthia and this is my dairy. I'm a young girl living on the streets. I like to go to school because I like learning stuff, though I have to use a typing tablet until I learn to write better. I'm starting this now because I wanted to share how I met my bestest, closest friend, Jay.

I was sitting on my bench where I sleep and he asked if I was ok but I'd become cautious of talking to strangers.

"What's it to you?"

"Us kids on the streets gotta look out for each other."

"You on the streets then?" I asked. I was beginning to like him.

"Looks like it, doesn't it." He came and sat on my bench. "I'm Jay. What's your name?" he reached out his hand.

"Cynthia." I shook it. "Don't know my last name though."

"Neither do I. So what."

"Do you have a family?"

"Not that I know of. You?"

My ears dipped. "Not really"

Truth is I didn't really wanna talk about my "family". he never pressed about it, even when he decided to go to school so he could be with me. That's when we became best friends.

It was the start of a beautiful and everlasting friendship and not just for us two. There are two others like us, Sam and Naober. They stay over at the junkyard but we saw them from time to time. Jay was the one with the courage to actually go and talk to them, and then we just kind of formed a pack. We had such adventures, camping out in the forest during winter when it was cold, exploring the city and also, on occasions, looking for clues as to what we were and where we came from. Though I don't think any of us expected to find that out through my past catching up with me.

That family I mentioned. It seems they were finally able to trace me here. They were really more of a foster family. I hated them. Well, my foster mum, Reachal, was alright. My sister and I used to get on when I was little (littler) but as we grew up, we grew more apart. And the dad was just plain mean. He always seemed angry all the time, so harsh and strict. I wanted to get away from them for ages before I ran away. The final straw was when my grandad died, probably the one person in that family I thought ever truly loved me. I couldn't take it anymore, so I ran. I'm so glad I did. I would never have met Jay or the others if I hadn't. I wouldn't even have known there were others like me out here. Running away was the best thing I ever did.

Well now it might appear that it was all for nothing, since I first saw my foster dad in the streets. I pointed him out to Jay and we both went to hide, but neither of us could hide when he showed up at our school.

"Everyone, this is Steev Carpenter. He's here looking for his daughter who went missing…" The teacher looked over at Steev.

"Over a year ago, now." He said.

"I'd give up hope, mate." It was Jay that said that.

I looked back at him. He was looking at Steev as though he were an evil monster that needed to be stopped.

"No." I heard Steev say, still looking at Jay. "I won't give up. Because now I've found her." I heard his heavy footsteps come towards me and slowly I looked around.

As soon as I saw him I narrowed my eyes. "You lied."

He stopped a few inches away from my table. "What?"

"You lied to me my whole life and now you're lying to everyone else."

It could've been that he wasn't used to this version of me or just the fact that he was being yelled at by a five year old but all he could say was "Sorry. What?"

"I know you're not my real family and I know I'm not human."

That got his attention. He didn't say anything but I could tell from his poster.

"That's why I had to get away. I had to run."

"You ran away? We thought someone had taken you!"

I shook my head slowly. "I left by choice and I'm not going back." I wanted to get up and run out of the classroom. Neither of us said another word until I got the chance, fleeing behind Steev and out the door. He didn't even move. Sam and Naober quickly followed and Jay came last, still looking at Steev, although he didn't look angry any more. More confused.

"What was that about?"

"I have no idea."
