Dear Diary. Chapter 1.

Dear Diary,

I am too scared right now. The sun's rays still don't light up my room and Mom is still sleeping. I feel so alone between the sheets that the only sound rumbling in my ears is caused by the bugs in the garden. I might even cry — I am about to cry — but not from loneliness, but from fear.

That was the way I felt it a few minutes ago when I remained with my eyes closed, sleeping, even though you know that I don't sleep. I do not dream. I'm going to tell you, but only to you, not to her. She is bad, she is cruel.

I hate her so much! I know she is hiding in the gloom of my room, laughing at my tears and the fear that runs through my veins. I wish that she was gone forever, that she vanished into thin air, but that will never be possible. For now, I only have you next to me.

❝It was very cold where I was, so cold that I was floating on a piece of ice. I was not afraid, as there was someone next to me, holding my hand. It was my mother. Her presence gave me more security, but anyway I could not help worrying a little knowing that we were not at home —or near it—, I had no idea where we were, I could only see the water. Much water.

At that moment I noticed something below us. It was a giant shadow! Or at least I perceived it that way. It moved from one side to the other, but always staying close to the piece of ice that held us. My mother, meanwhile, set her gaze on the horizon without knowing of the existence of that shadow.

Before I could warn her about that, a whale emerged from the water —that was the shadow—and with a great leap ate my mother. Then my face went pale, but it was also stained by little red drops. In her place, traces of a ruby-colored liquid remained and insecurity began to grow within me. I did not have my mother next to me, and the fear —that someone else might hurt me— was noticeable.

Between the unbearable cold and the snow, a little girl floated on a piece of ice. She did not move from there, she just kept standing, alone, and lost. She looked down at her and watched as the shadow smiled at her with those huge red eyes, while she teased her underwater.
