Alex's POV
The thing was, I had thought I would be overjoyed to hear those words. But strangely, as Lewis uttered them, a wave of confusion washed over me. Was this truly what I wanted? To assume the role of alpha once Lewis was no more? I had indeed believed that I deserved the position, but my envisioned path to it was vastly different.
My gaze remained locked on Lewis, and a complex mix of emotions churned within me. There he stood, looking so worn and aged, a stark contrast to the fierce and commanding alpha I had known him to be. Illness and time had gnawed away at his strength, finally pushing him to recognize that it was time to pass on the mantle. And yet, instead of the pride I had expected, a pang of disappointment tugged at my heart.
