Chapter 43

He was beginning to think that Pax, as pleasant as it was, was ripe for an invasion. They had their Peace, but there was something missing. It reminded him of the conversation he had with Daniel what felt like a lifetime ago. The Peace was there, but it was habit. They didn't know the reason behind their custom. Before he judged them too harshly Patrick wondered what habits he took for granted.

He was so deep in thought he didn't see Stone and Justine run ahead until he heard the commotion. A man who was much taller than Patrick was holding on to Stone, while Justine was hugging a woman who was short and powerfully built. When he caught up to them Justine made introductions.

"Dad, this is Davvad and Marisha," she said.

"Please call me Patrick," he said and took Davvad's hand.

"We have heard much about you," Davvad said in a deep voice. "Welcome, and be at peace in our home and hearth. Though the welcome is little enough in these times."
