Paragon of Death

Life from birth has been nothing but hell. I lost my parents to some stupid aristocrats whom they offended. Executed for no good reason. My relatives abandoned me and pushed me aside. They feared for their lives and left me and my sister to starve and wander the streets alone! No, this is worse than hell! I watched my sister die of starvation. Her lips were dry and her feet bloody. Her nails were broken and her fingers riddled with cuts. She struggled in my hands and after a few seconds of struggle she passed away. She seemed joyful in death so I prayed mine will come just as swift and merciful as hers. So I stayed in the alleyway, alone with her rotten corpse awaiting my fate for God knows how long. I could see it already. The darkness encroaching from all sides Everyone said death is scary but I say it's the end! Who needs life after death? What is the need for reincarnation? Who would want to return to this crazy world? "It's not yet time for you to go... You have one more task to accomplish as my host" A voice called out to me. I could barely see or speak but how can I miss such a beautiful face? It was an extremely handsome man who gazed at me with tender eyes. "Haven't I suffered enough? Can't I just rest?" I cried out. Why would I want to stay back in such a cruel world? "Don't you want to avenge the death of your parents? Don't you want to become something greater? I can make that happen!" The beautiful man said with an alluring voice. "You... Who are you?" I asked with an anxious heart. My parents always said God is the only one who cares about me! Maybe in my final hours, he has come to save me. "Call me Death..."

Chapter 18: Cyrus Light

Damon frowned as he watched the demonstration. Yes, the strength of fully charged spells were amazing, but they are too slow, they could get a person killed on the battlefield.

He wondered if it was possible to stop charging halfway through the process and just release the spell for half the power. That would be more convenient

"Trying to cast a spell halfway through the magic circle process is very dangerous, and it can explode in your face" Professor Alonso said as he shot Damon a glance. It looked like he could read his mind.

"Now amongst mages are a series of classes or pathways you can choose to walk. Do not forget each class is very important and has a major role to play in the advancement of this empire. There are the War mages, the Oracles, the enchanters, and the Warden class. Each plays a massive role in the kingdom." Professor Alonso said.

"Is it possible for one to combine two classes?" A youth with brown hair and a chubby body asked.

"Of course." Professor Alonso said.

"I am a specialist. A specialist is a title gotten only when a person master's all four roles…" The professor said with a hint of pride in his tone.

The entire classroom was stunned. Everyone knew professor Alonso was never a noble when he joined the academy, he was a commoner who got a noble sponsor. To be able to master all four classes meant a lot and that explains why the man is treated specially in the kingdom.

While everyone's eyes sparkled, Damon remained dull and silent. He didn't seem impressed at all. The professor noticed this and felt a bit offended because he did this for Damon!

He was hoping to inspire Damon into doing more and surpassing everyone in the class to shame. In fact, he even suspected Damon wasn't paying attention.

"Damon Ross… Which specialization do you wish to join?" The professor asked.

Damon heard his name called and frowned. He hated that he got disturbed. His eyes hovered a bit before they rested on the good-looking professor.

His eyes were empty as he looked at the man and slowly stood up before answering.

"War mages."

Damon's answer was brief and dry, but the professor didn't mind.

"Just war mage? You are a mage blessed with three elements. I'm sure you can do more than that." The professor said.

He was secretly implying that Damon would be wasting his talent if he just focused on one class.

"I only have an interest in killing and destroying trash. Nothing else catches my attention. So I will stick with my plans." Damon said as he looked down at the professor with empty eyes.

Many students whispered, mocking him. Some called him brute, while others called him numerous names, but the smarter ones remained silent as they gazed at Damon with a frown. They have seen him fight, and they concluded if this man is allowed to become a war mage, and he focuses all the time on this, he will become a tyrant!

The class ended briefly later after a lot was explained to them, including cultivation methods, magic beasts, dungeons, and more. Those were just general topics and the professor didn't go too deep into them.

….....

Damon got to the cafeteria and quickly found an empty table after he got some porridge, soup, steak, and rice. He sat down and ate in silence, but everyone around stole glances at him, but Damon didn't bother with them. He was still concerned with his inability to practice the death magic due to conditions.

Thud!

Damon heard someone approach and when he looked up he saw something stunning. It was a kid, his age with golden eyes, golden hair, and in a golden robe. He was practically the opposite of Damon who looked like the devil with his all black attire.

He was one of the chosen. But from what Damon heard, he was an anomaly that possess only the light element but with an insane level of affinity.

<<This… How did he find you?>> Death's voice sounded disturbed as the youth sat directly opposite Damon.

"You… You have the power of death… you are the death guardian spirit host." The boy seemed to be straightforward.

Damon on the other hand was no pushover. He seemed passive even when faced with the accusation and simply sip his soup.

"And what if I am?" Damon said calmly.

"I am Cyrus light, from the house of Duke light… Life guardian spirit host." The kid said calmly as he cut out a small piece of meat and threw it into his mouth.

Hearing this, Damon finally showed some reaction. He didn't expect this kid to expose himself too. He couldn't help but wonder what was going on in this kid's head.

"What do you want?" Damon stopped eating and leaned back.

Thankfully, their table was slightly farther from the others so no one could hear them as long as they spoke in low tones.

"Over the years, countless life guardian spirit hosts have been killed by the holy church… The current head of the Light family is the pope of the holy church and by law should be succeeded by the child of life… but he has no intentions of letting go of his power… My elder brother was the original child of life. The host of the life guardian spirit, but he was killed. They expect the guardian spirit to be reborn and never expected it would just choose someone who has been living for a while."

"This is none of my business…" Damon said coldly as he interrupted the kid.

"You have your problems, I have mine. There is no reason why I should let yours become mine as well" Damon added before he resumed eating.

"Don't you understand? The guardian spirits all over this kingdom are getting murdered because they stood alone. The world is rejecting them because they have the potential to become the most powerful beings in this world… if we don't stand together, we will end up dying just like those who came before us!" Cyrus said with a frown. Even though he was pissed, he didn't raise his voice.
