Chapter 9: Suspicion

For almost a week, Emma stayed with Miss Park in her apartment. It was clear that she was not rich, but she wasn't poor either.

Throughout these days, Emma faced the difficult task of thinking of different outcomes to her current situation. She placed her feelings at the back of the banner, only thinking of what would happen to a grandmother if she couldn't go back.

Her grandmother was her only living relative and vice versa.

But what kept her up at night was the thought of her parents being cold and if they would be buried in their ancestral home like her grandfather 6 months prior.

She was in the small room that Nayeon gave her to use while she was there, and started thinking of what she was going to do now that she was alone in a foreign country, far from the home she had known and faced don't think challenges of starting a new chapter without her parents.

In the mist of her grief, Emma had felt that Nayeon and the embassy were hiding something from her.

On the first day she came to live in Nayeon's apartment, Nayeon would put the phone on speaker and translate what was said whenever she got a call with me information, but Nayeon suddenly stopped on the third day.

She would leave the room for another when she got a call, and they had stopped going to the police station and the embassy when before they went and stayed a while for Emma to be asked questions.

At first, Emma thought it was because she couldn't provide the police with more information, but Nayeon started going alone the next day, leaving Emma alone in the apartment.

This prompted Emma to learn some Korean using the English Korean dictionary and books she found in the bookshelf. These books were most likely used by Nayeon to learn English.

She learned in secret when Nayeon was not watching her. This made a feel like she was a thief at night because she would hide in her room to learn.

She only learned what was necessary enough for her to put together simple sentences even if they're not grammatically correct. She could tell was she learnt on the plane was useless when it comes to day to day speaking.

Earlier today, she asked Nayeon to go with her to the embassy. She could see that Nayeon was hesitating, but at the end, Nayeon reluctantly agreed, thus further proving Emma's suspicion.
