Chapter 1: Make A Wish

If there's once thing all doctors and nurses would hate with their entire soul, it would be the all-famous "graveyard shift". A shift that not only tests their ability to withstand hours without sleeping but also to test their abilities on how to treat patients who are suddenly rolled into the hospital.

3:40 AM

Hyun-Tae sighs when he sees the time on his watch that is wrapped around his left wrist. He couldn't wait for his shift to end, wanting to lay down on his soft bed and never wake up.

Another thing that irks the man is that its eerily quiet during these times, mostly because the nurses and doctors don't bother to chat so that their energy won't be wasted.

"Here's your coffee, you look like you need it." Mark offers the drink to his friend who accepts it with a smile.

"You make good coffee, "Hyun-Tae admits after drinking, his friend chuckles at the compliment as he didn't expect it coming at all.

"You flatter him too much, "Bella rolls her eyes when Mark looks at her with a glare that didn't affect her any bit.

"It's Maxim," Mark jabs the side of the female doctor once she drops the secret of why his coffee weirdly tastes good all the time.

"I'll pretend I didn't hear that because Mark here is finally good at something for once." Bella laughs at her friend's confession, her laughs echoing throughout the hallway.

"Hey! That's not true!"Mark defends himself but that only fuels Bella's laugh even further.

"You're going to wake up the fucking patients Bella fucking Swan," Hyun-Tae felt the sudden tension because he knew that his friend hated to be called the character from Twilight.

And as what the Korean male expected, the two started fighting each other with tickles and pokes. Mark regrets his decision as he's very ticklish but that doesn't stop him as he suddenly pulls the curly hair of his friend.

"You guys are going to end up being suspended if you keep up with this," He tries to separate the two with all of his might which somehow separates them. The two look at each other with a glare as their chests move up and down after the small fighting session.

"It's his fault!"Bella points to Mark, who only gives her two middle fingers up in the air as a reply to the accusation.

"Both of you are at fault, now shut up before you'll wake up the patients," Hyun-Tae says which quickly makes the two zip their mouths.

"It's your fault-" But before Mark continues, a familiar sound interrupts him which causes them to turn their heads to the direction of the sound.

"Oh, shit,"

And as what they expected, two bloody patients on the stretcher enters the emergency room with two EMT's rushing them towards the surgery room.

One of the EMT's looks like they were struggling with CPR, arms giving up as they were performing it along the way to the hospital. If they continue with the current pace, CPR wouldn't be effective to the patient and that's not a good thing at all, which is why one of the doctors moves forward.

"Let me take it from here, give me his stats instead."Hyun-Tae interrupts the person on top of the body who quickly agrees. The two exchange positions quickly and the male doctor starts giving his all, doing his best so that the patient's heart will beat once again.

"How is his blood pressure?"

"It's not even reading,"

"His heart is arrested during the way and he isn't responding to the medicine, "The EMT adds as they rush the patient through the empty hallway. It was quick and easy.

Once they reached the Trauma center, Hyun-Tae quickly asks for the Intracardiac injection and the nurse hesitates because it can't be injected without care. For an inexperienced person, it wouldn't be advisable to do it without supervision.

"Dr. Lee," He looks up only to see the nurse's face, laced with fear as she hands him the injection. It wasn't easy to give that medication, especially when it needs to be inserted in the perfect position.

But it's Hyun-Tae we're talking about, one of the most dedicated doctors of the entire hospital who constantly strives for the best.

The male didn't even hesitate and quickly insert the needle perfectly into the heart muscle, shocking the nurse and the two EMT's as well with confidence and accuracy of the male.

And after giving him the shot, the stretcher then continues to be rolled into the surgery room where his team is waiting for him.

______

After one long busy shift, the tired doctor finds himself leaning on Mark's shoulder, barely awake as they take the subway home. It was currently 6 in the morning, where the sun is starting to rise from the darkness.

"Can't you wait to get home? I thought giving you three cups of coffee during the shift would help you, but you ended up like this." Mark complains, not like the heavyweight on his shoulder but he only receives a muffled groan from the other.

"Shut up,"

With those simple words, Mark completely shuts his mouth in fear of annoying his friend. Despite being kind, Hyun-Tae gets pretty scary once annoyed. So the man decides to focus on his music that is provided by his trusty earphones.

The subway then stops midway to their journey, the doors open as crowds of people leave and enter the car. But this particular stop seems to be popular with passengers, as it gets quite full.

It wasn't something Mark would mind, seeing that he's sitting down (the only thing he doesn't mind is the weight on his shoulder as he soon feels its effects).

Mark yawns, hands quick to cover his mouth. It was good that Hyun-Tae didn't flinch at all, because he isn't ready for the biggest scolding in his entire life in public.

His eyes then wander through the semi-full car, trying his best not to fall asleep too because he didn't want them to end up in the wrong station which would earn his one bone-crushing kick to his calves from his friend.

It was weird because he felt like they were being watched. It wasn't like they were wearing anything eye-catching that it will catch the attention of some passengers.

Oh.

It took Mark a while for his brain to process what was going on, an effect of withstanding such a shift. But once he got it, a blush starts to bloom on his face, spreading like wildfire.

"Hyun-Tae," He whispers, head-turning to the right to face his best friend sleeping on his shoulder. As he expected, he didn't get any response.

"Hyun-Tae," Mark repeats, voice louder than it was before but it still didn't work as he still could hear the soft snores coming out of the other.

Plan B it is then, He thinks to himself.

With his right arm, he carefully raises it (not wanting to wake his friend up) and it slowly finds its destination which is the small waist of the other. To others, it may look like a lover trying to hold his man's waist but the thing is, it isn't what it looks like.

But before he could move his fingers against the waist of his best friend ready to tickle the other, Hyun-Tae was fast enough to hold the wrist of Mark which shocks him.

"Do you want to die?" The Korean male breaks into a grin after rising from his previous position while still holding his friend's wrist.

Mark freezes as fear takes over his entire body, not liking the way his friend looks at him as if he's prey. His fear doubles when he feels the increasing pressure on his poor wrist, eyes snap to the other who only gives him another smile.

"I'm sorry! Dude let go, I can't operate if you continue- AH!" Hyun-Tae finally lets go of Mark's wrist, dusting his hands with his favorite pair of cargo pants. He thought that his friend already learned from the mistake and he also didn't want to risk breaking the man's wrist.

"Jesus Fucking Christ, dude why did you even do that?!" Mark questions as he uses his other hand to massage the other, rubbing the pain away. Hyun-Tae simply answers with a simple, "You tried to tickle me,"

"Keyword tried."

"Still,"

"Fuck you," Mark hisses, not caring if the other passengers heard it at all.

Hyun-Tae places his hand on his chest, turning to the direction of his friend before faking a hurt expression on his face. He gets a huff from his friend in reply who turns his back away as he continues to massage his poor wrist which made the Korean male laugh at his reaction.

"It's not funny,"

"I think this is what they meant by sweet revenge don't you think? You know how much I despise being tickled," Hyun-Tae states the obvious, but he didn't get a reply from him as the other stays quiet.

Mark stays quiet the entire ride home, which the other couldn't complain because his dramatic self would act like this but only longer. The only cons of hurting are friend is now, he's personal pillow is now far away.

Great, Hyun-Tae thinks.

With his pillow away, he ends up leaning his head back on the window which was annoying because the vibrations on his head didn't help him fall asleep (which is what he needs to do).

"Fucking Mark,"

"You're too easy to please," Hyun-Tae sighs, looking at his friend who's happily licking the Melona ice cream like a child. It bothered the Korean seeing Mark dejected, so he buys him ice cream once they leave the cramped subway.

"You're lactose intolerant, so with that being said you have no right to judge me." Mark teases him before taking the last bite of the creamy dessert, leaving him with a frozen tongue and a small popsicle stick.

"You didn't need to rub it on my face," He huffs, eyes narrowing in annoyance. He hated the fact that he can't eat any good that contains dairy, well he could try but that will only make him end up with a long session in the toilet and a queasy stomach.

Rest assured, we won't go any further. But you get the point.

"Thanks for the treat, I should pretend being hurt by you so that I could get free food," Mark says with a playful smile, but he regrets it once he sees the scowl on the other's face. Maybe, it wasn't a great idea after all.

"I'll make sure to break your wrist then,"

"You wouldn't dare,"

"Hey!" Hyun-Tae hears his friend shout once he turns his back and walks away from him. He couldn't handle the hyper Mark at all, as he is far too drained from the surgeries and rounds he did during the shift to deal with him.

"You aren't going to stop are you?!" Mark yells at the top of his lungs, not caring about the passerby's looking at him weirdly. It was the only choice left, as he slowly sees his friend merge with the crowd and eventually leaves his sight.

"He's something," He chuckles as he throws the wooden popsicle stick into the nearest trash bin and heads back to his apartment slowly but surely as he makes sure to breathe in the fresh morning air and enjoy the sun's rays.

It takes less than an hour and all the energy left in Hyun-Tae to arrive at his loft. It was nothing out of the ordinary, just a lot of windows on the walls and a cozy vibe to make him and the guests comfortable during their visit.

You may wonder why he's not in some fancy house with glamorous decor all over the place, serving his guest champagne once they enter. It's just a simple answer: it's too tiring.

Why is it tiring? Doesn't he withstand long hours in the hospital, going in and out in the surgery room? If he can handle those daily activities he can surely handle an amazing house with a great view, right?

The answer is, no.

To everyone's surprise, he prefers living in a humble home. First, he can easily go through his entire room without the hassles of stairs and doors. Second, it's much easier to clean by himself without the need of hiring a cleaner. Last and not least, he loves simplicity.

And with that being said, he easily finds his way towards the sofa and lands on its face first with a thump as he was too tired to go upstairs to his bed.

His body immediately sags as it finally gets the rest it deserves, grabbing the closest pillow and hugs it. The small sunlight that manages to escape the blackout curtains he owns shines on his body with a glow that illuminates the entire loft.

A soft snore erupts from his soft lips a signal that he's already asleep, having the first train ticket to dreamland. The loft is dead silent, except for the sounds leaving the exhausted male who already arrived at his destination.

And once his body wakes up, its the start of his daily --- forever routine.

For someone who likes things organized and planned, Hyun-Tae hates it.

__________

"You guys look like you had a rough shift," Bella comments as she shuts her locker close, already dressed in her clothes. Her two friends in the locker rooms closed their doors rather harshly, causing the lady to jump in surprise.

"A rough shift? It was hell!" Mark complains as he slings his backpack over his shirt covered shoulder. He then takes a sit on the bench nearby, leaning his head on the wall for support.

"Hell?" She asks.

"I performed an appendectomy on a teen earlier, and the parents of the child won't listen to me at all even if I told them they could die if we don't perform it right away. Not only that, but I got yelled at by a shit ton of guardians today for 'not doing my job properly'." He explains with his eyes close, his voice didn't even have any hint of anger as he was too tired to even feel mad.

"Mad guardians are the worst, they swear at you and threaten to sue you! Like Karen, get your children vaccinated first before you fight me!" Mark snorts at Bella's reply and Hyun-Tae only chuckles.

"How about you Hyunnie? Got anything to spill?" She teases, pointing her index finger towards the Korean male whose eyes widen at the sudden attention. He quickly lowers his head to hide his blush, that nickname will always make him feel like this since forever.

"Bella and I already spoke, it's unfair if you don't," Mark says with a grin, head now leaving its previous position as he looks at the male.

"What Mark said,"

"Everything went smoothly today, except Dr. Anderson he's an ass for sure. I swear I couldn't almost find the difference between him and a 5-year-old child at all." Hyun-Tae complains as he crosses his hands together, leaning on the locker for support.

"You two are just too different? If that makes any sense. Plus, you've been working with Reese ever since you got here so it wouldn't be a surprise if you aren't used to working with other people yet." Bella states, toying with her curly hair that she's 100% proud of.

"Reese has sense, the others don't. I almost lost my patient because of him, if I didn't see the sudden drop of blood pressure, the life of the patient could've died in my hands." Hyun-Tae says, looking down at his hands as remembers the situation that happened earlier.

"He what?!" The two screams in unison, not believing what they heard from their friend. How could one be so irresponsible? How could one not pay attention to the person who's desperately doing their best to fight for their life?

"There's no need to waste your energy by cussing and throwing a fit because of him. I already warned him about this, and he'll get suspended if he does that again." Hyun-Tae says as he walks away from the lockers and opening the door with his hand that isn't occupied with his duffle bag.

"You're too scary" Mark sighs and stands up, dusting his pants before following his friend who's still holding the door open.

"How does Reese even handle your ass? I swear you look like you're going to kill everyone with that icy glare of yours." Bella comments once they start walking their way towards the hospital's exit, it took some time considering the number of people coming into the building.

"I'm not scary! Right, Mark?" He turns his head towards the other who shakes his head, not agreeing to what he said which made the elder deflate in defeat.

"Not scary my ass, you give off the 'don't approach me' vibe in the hospital. Sometimes I wonder how we even became friends," Mark answers as the automatic door opens for them, taking one step out of the hospital.

"Freedom!" Bella screams, arms raised above her head. She then closes her eyes, enjoying the soft sunlight and the fresh summer breeze that caresses her skin. The people walking past her looks at the female with questioning gazes but that doesn't falter her expression at all.

"You're making the hospital look bad," Mark snickers as he passes by Bella, who's eyes snap open at the remark.

"Fucking bitch!" Hyun-Tae looks behind when he hears a yell, only to see Mark in a headlock. He wonders if they know that they are in public, in the middle of the hospital's entrance which means there's a lot of people passing by them. But since it's Mark and Bella, they would tear each other into shreds at any place and at any time.

"What did do again?" He asks once in front of the two, it was always amusing to see Bella bully Mark despite being smaller than him.

"Being a total asshole," She replies with a smirk, ignoring the pleas of the man. Although it may look like she's choking him, she's not.

"In short, he pissed you off?" Bella nods in agreement.

"And what will it take for you to remove your arm from his neck and stop gaining the attention of the crowd?" Hyun-Tae asks, gesturing the helpless Mark and then to the people around them.

"Well, there's one thing that will make me stop," Bella grins, showing off her pearly whites. The male in front mentally prepares himself for whatever goes out of her mouth, as she's very unpredictable.

"W-whatever she says, you better do it, man." Mark stutters in her hold. Hyun-Tae rolls his eyes, not believing that he's always saving them from trouble. It was like he was a babysitter for two kids who hate each other with their entire soul.

He ends up in front of a frozen yogurt shop, it looked like the ones you see in movies: cartoony and childish. But that doesn't stop Bella and Mark, as they quickly enter the shop and look around the cute shop filled with eye-catching decor.

"If all children act like them, I'll never want one." He mutters to himself before holding the handle and opening the door. Once he does, he is immediately greeted by the cold air that makes him shiver under his clothes.

"How are you guys not dying of the cold?" He asks his friends who shrugs his question off.

"Because we're wearing a long coat above our clothes, unlike you who's just wearing a black turtleneck you e-boy," Mark says before placing his attention back on the menu.

"This was unplanned, I should've let you die in the hands of Bella." He complains, lips unconsciously pouting.

"Dude look! There's a Wishing Well froyo! We have to get this!" Mark says, excitement clear from his voice and his actions. Hyun-Tae decides to look at whatever he was pointing at, and it was a great deal if he was questioned.

The Wishing Well Froyo is four different flavors of frozen yogurt of your choice (with toppings), placed inside a mini wishing well that is decorated with flowers and edible greens to fit the theme. It doesn't stop there, as the shop has its Wishing Well and you could make a free wish!

"You promised you'll do anything! Its a great deal too! Please Hyunnie!" Bella and Mark beg, hands clamped together and heads down. Everyone in the shop had their eyes on the trio, waiting for the very next move.

"Excuse me, one Wishing Well froyo please." Hyun-Tae orders, the cashier punches the order and tells their co-worker to prepare the Wishing Well.

"What flavor would you like in the Wishing Well Sir?"

"Plain, Strawberry, Pineapple, and Vanilla." He answers, knowing well of his friend's favorite frozen yogurt flavors. After paying the cashier with his card and placing his wallet back in his bag, he turns around only to see his friends crying which makes him panic.

"Hyun-Tae is the best!" They say in unison before tackling the male in a hug that made him stumble from the sudden force. Not to lie, he didn't like the feeling of his sweater getting damp but what can he do?

"You guys are idiots," He chuckles before patting them on their backs as an effort to calm themselves down but it backfires because their cries only become louder.

"Idiots, total idiots."

____

After hanging out with his friends, Hyun-Tae is now dressed in his cat-themed pajamas and tucked safely under the soft and fluffy duvets he bought. Despite him being tired from the activities, he couldn't sleep at all.

"Eyes please fucking cooperate I just want to sleep here," He says, placing his arm on his eyes in hopes of reaching dreamland but instead he revisited the events that happened earlier.

"The well in the shop looked so cool! Anyways what did you wish earlier? I wished that my roommate would stop bringing girls in the apartment every night," Mark says as they take the stairs to go to the subway station.

"I wished for good health, that's all. How about you Hyun-Tae?" Bella questions, bumping her shoulder gently on the taller male in hopes of being heard.

"My wish would not come true if I share it with you guys." He simply answers, which made the other two frown as they were excited to hear what he wished for.

"Come on, did you think it's going to happen?" Mark asks and Hyun-Tae stops walking as he feels a blush starting to bloom on his pale skin.

"Oh my fucking God, you did believe! Bella, we must protect Hyun-Tae at all costs!" He exclaims, fighting the air like a boxer and dodging attacks to give emphasis.

"If a bitch ever tries you bitch, let me know," Bella says with a smirk. Although it might be silly, Hyun-Tae knows it was genuine because he would also do anything to protect his friends from danger.

"You guys are embarrassing me," Hyun-Tae groans as he hides his face behind his hands, not wanting to show how flustered he is from what Mark said.

"It's our job! Now, let's buy cards to go back home before its sold out!" Bella says and drags the two men towards the ticket booth (with Hyun-Tae still covering his face).

"So what if I believe in those," He mutters before lying down on his right side, facing the night sky from the windows on the loft.

"It's not like it isn't real right Fuyu?" Hyun-Tae asks his large white cat stuffed toy, who's cute eyes only reflect himself. It became a habit for him to sleep with a stuffed animal, to feel less lonely in his gigantic bed.

"You wouldn't mind Fuyu if I'll tell you right?" He ponders, before sitting up and facing the stuffed cat. It felt ridiculous but he wanted to share his wish, plus Fuyu is great at keeping secrets so it will be in great hands.

He ended up looking down on his lap, playing with his fingers, he left nervous for some reason and he can't understand why. His heartfelt like he's been running a couple of miles with how fast it's beating, his stomach isn't doing great too.

"I wished I meet somehow who cares about cats as much I do,"
