Chapter 6 Part I

After spending several weeks jumping with the parachute, in mid-September it was time for the cadets to begin the part relating to the landing on the water, finally the Agency technicians had managed to fix the "mockup" of the Magellan.

Usually that type of exercise was carried out between July and September, however some technical problems had imposed delays but fortunately they were in Sicily where the climate allowed the outdoor exercises to be extended.

That morning the class met at the port of Lampedusa and before their eyes they saw a life-size representation of the Magellan floating, waiting for them on the pier was Lieutenant Dorato who seemed more satisfied than expected.

<< Today is cheerful >> Orlando whispered to his friends, noticing a strange and disturbing grin on the teacher's face;

<< Maybe he had a party last night >> replied Leonardo;

<< Stop being children >> Alice rebuked them while the officer was preparing to speak to illustrate what they should do.

<< Very good guys, we are finally ready to start the water landing tests and I warn you from the beginning, do not underestimate this exercise or you will pay the consequences.

The teams will be the same as the parachuting course so we won't waste much time, in a day each group will only be able to carry out one exercise so as to allow everyone to train.

You will start with a long training which I previously explained to you how to carry out and since I hate repeating myself I would say to start immediately >> said the lieutenant signaling to the boys to divide into teams and line up.

Leonardo's team was the second after that of Aurora who had stayed away from him during the weeks of parachuting but now had every intention of returning to the charge to conquer him and this time she had decided to get serious.

He approached him furtively from behind, placing his hand on Leonardo's shoulder, who was taken aback and jumped backwards in fright.

<< Make sure I don't bite >> he said, smiling at him;

<<Sorry but you scared me>> he replied taking a step back;

<< I rather like fragile men, why don't you wish me good luck? >> he asked him in a provocative tone;

<< Good luck! Now let us prepare >> Alice intervened abruptly, who deeply hated Aurora even though she couldn't explain the reason;

<< How grumpy we are >> Aurora retorted and a fight would have started if it hadn't been for the young woman's team who called her to start the exercise.

<< It doesn't end here, we will definitely see each other again >> Aurora warned them as she walked away.

<< You must have bewitched her>> said Orlando, patting Leonardo on the shoulder;

<< Honestly, I would definitely have done without it >> replied the friend.

All the other cadets were taken to a building opposite the port, completely soundproofed and with tinted windows so that they could not see how the previous team's exercise was taking place.

The lieutenant had taken that precaution so as not to give an advantage to those who would carry out the exercise after the first team, therefore his collaborators had set up a sort of "cage for the deprivation of the senses" inside a former abandoned munitions factory.

<< Follow my assistant and wait your turn >> Dorato communicated to the other freshmen;

<<Where the hell are they taking us?>> Alice asked suspiciously;

<< With me please >> a short, stocky woman dressed as a civilian encouraged them, motioning with her hand not to slow down.

When they entered the building the neon lights immediately turned on, it was a huge empty room inside which there was absolutely nothing except the floor and although the sun was shining outside, inside the building it seemed like it was night.

<< Can we know what this place is? >> Alice said, turning to the woman.

The old lady looked her up and down with her little brown eyes, they looked like two large hazelnuts stuck in the hollow trunk of her face wrapped in an inscrutable air, she seemed to have no feelings even though some cadets were scared.

<< Miss, please calm down. I don't owe you any explanations, when it's your turn you will be called. Now kindly let me go >> replied the impatient woman;

<< If you think that we will stay here without asking questions, you are very wrong >> Chiara burst out, coming forward, alongside Alice.

Those threats had the right effect, in fact other boys also joined the list of those who wanted explanations, surrounding the old lady who, however, did not seem very intimidated by that sort of revolt.

<<You were brought here so that you don't see what the exercise consists of will stay there and if anyone wants to leave they are free do but know by doing automatically fail>> replied the woman turning her back and closing the steel door of the stable.

<< A great nuisance >> Orlando snorted;

<< We can't complain because in space no one will warn us of any unexpected events so it's better to get used to the twists and turns >> said Lucia.

That situation scared her but she didn't want to show it, everyone knew her for her strong temperament and they had to continue to do so, furthermore she hated showing herself fragile in front of others especially if Orlando was present however a strong anxiety took over her making her dizziness, forcing her to sit on the floor.

After waiting a difficultly quantifiable time, the door of the building opened again and Leonardo's team was summoned outside.

The boys got up and headed towards the entrance of the building and then began the daily exercise in which what they had to do was very simple: enter the spaceship floating in the sea, put on the intravehicular suit simulating having just landed after a long journey space, changing into special thermal suits for survival in hostile environments and throwing the emergency kit into the sea and then jumping into the water themselves.

In theory nothing could be simpler, they had already studied most of those maneuvers in other courses so it was just a matter of remembering what they had learned previously and yet Chiara felt that something was wrong.

When the boys came out of the building they met the shocked looks of the members of the first team and were shocked.

<< My goodness, how they are, this Golden must have made them do something terrible even if I don't know what could be worse than throwing themselves from 4500 meters high >> said Orlando;

<< When we are in the spaceship with our ears straight, it seems too simple. Lieutenant Dorato will certainly have set some traps within the exercise >> Chiara warned them, noticing the faces of the boys from the first team.

They seemed to have just emerged from Dante's Inferno, certainly not the best omen for starting an exercise like that.

<< I never liked Dorato, from the first day of class he seemed too aggressive >> concluded Leonardo.

<< Very good, here is the second team. Swallow the sensor for real-time monitoring of your health and good luck >> the officer told them, puffing out his chest.

The boys downed a small red pill and headed to the Magellan, whose door opened, allowing them to enter inside, after which it closed almost instantly, emitting a screech typical of horror films.

They immediately started wearing the intravehicular suit and once the operation was finished they began to change and then went to the hold where they were supposed to get the emergency kit to throw into the water.

They had just finished dressing when the spacecraft's emergency lights turned on all at once and the Magellan began to sway dangerously left and right, not allowing them to stay upright, it felt like they were on a roller coaster.

<<What the hell is happening? Pandora give me an update>> said Chiara;

<< Good morning guys, you were forced to make an emergency landing on the planet Zork where there are large oceans and small islands with very high rocks and caves where you can take shelter. This planet is subject to strong tsunamis and it seems that one of large proportions is starting right now.

Your task is to escape the spacecraft unharmed by sending an SOS signal which will be spotted by another Magellan traveling behind you.

The speed with which you carry out your tasks will be fundamental because on Zork the waves reach a height of tens of meters and could destroy the spacecraft or push you into the open sea where you would face certain death >> replied the AI with its usual calm tone causing Leonardo even greater annoyance than usual, he still hadn't gotten used to that calm and flat metallic voice.

<<What the hell does this have to do with what Dorato explained us in class?!>> Orlando shouted as a crane outside lifted the spacecraft into the air, shaking it left and right;

<< Sir, don't you think it's excessive? After all, they're just kids>> said the woman next to the lieutenant who had accompanied the cadets to the building opposite as she watched the Magellan move as if it were a fish just caught on a hook;

<< Don't worry Dora, I wanted to make an exercise that would otherwise be too boring and banal more exciting. There are five of them in there, let's see how they do >> he replied;

<<The first team was a disaster>> he pointed out;

<< Let's hope this goes better, the first ones didn't have chemistry but now we have a small group of friends. In space it is essential to know how to work as a team, you cannot think of acting alone >> Dorato explained to her.

Inside the spacecraft, due to the shaking given by the crane, the boys could barely stand, however they did not lose concentration on the focus of the mission.

<< Guys with me, hold on to the seats and let's go towards the hold to get the kit >> Leonardo proposed, immediately followed by his friends.

With difficulty they reached the hold but the kit was not in the place indicated by the manuals as Dorato had had it moved to the control room simulating the distraction of a worker in preparing the spacecraft before departure, a possibility which, although remote, could not be discarded when we went on a mission.

<< He's nowhere to be found, what do we do now? >> Orlando asked.

From outside the lieutenant signaled the crane to lift the spacecraft as high as possible and then let it fall into the water and gave the order to open the special nozzles installed to stage possible leaks caused by the emergency landing of the aircraft so that the Magellan could take on water.

The spacecraft was raised and a second later dropped into the water throwing the cadets inside in all directions.

Alice hit her head against a seat and lost consciousness for a few seconds while Leonardo hurt his arm badly and hit his back violently.

Caught off guard, Orlando and Lucia hit their legs and arms against the upper part of the Magellano, only Chiara managed to contain the damage.

<< Pandora find that damned kit >> the latter ordered as the water began to enter;

<< Guys, let's hurry up, everything is flooding >> added Leonardo;

<< I found the kit, it is in the control room where a worker placed it by mistake during the loading operations of the Magellan but you have to hurry, the storm is coming and the ship is deeply damaged, it could soon sink >> he announced AI;

<< Really fantastic! >> Lucia exclaimed.

Leonardo noticed Alice passed out on the ground so he rushed to help her, he gave her a few slaps on the face to make her come to her senses but it was useless.

<< Come on, get better! >> he shouted holding her in his arms;

<< Let me try >> Chiara intervened, giving her beloved a violent slap on the face, making her come to her senses;

<< Don't allow yourself to play these nasty tricks on me >> Chiara told her, hugging her tightly.

The control room was located at the opposite end of the hold so they had to cross the entire spaceship with the water rising copiously, at least the Magellan stopped shaking like a fish caught on a hook and began to stabilize again.

They reached their destination and to their great joy they found the kit under the captain's seat, Orlando grabbed it immediately after which they set off towards the exit door.

<< Let's try to get out of here as soon as possible! >> Lucia exclaimed, leading the small group out of the control room and heading towards the center of the aircraft.

From the outside, the lieutenant and his assistant were very surprised by their ability to adapt to that unexpected situation and even if the woman didn't want to show it she was cheering for the fearless cadets.

<<They have what it takes, no doubt about but let's see how they deal with this surprise>> said the officer, ordering the emergency doors inside the Magellano to be closed;

<< So they won't be able to reach the exit door and with the water level continuing to rise... >> the elderly secretary tried to object;

<< If they have studied the shape of the spacecraft very well they should know that there is another way to reach the exit, let's see if they remember it >> Dorato replied.

He pressed a red button on the tablet and the emergency doors inside the aircraft lowered, preventing the small group from reaching the exit.

Suddenly a door closed in front of the boys, blocking their path. They tried to change direction but soon found themselves trapped.

"What do we do now? We're screwed >> Orlando began in despair;

<< If we don't reach the door we can't get out >> added Leonardo;

<< I know, I'm a genius, but there must be a way to escape from this trap >> Chiara replied abruptly, starting to have enough of all those unexpected events.

A simple exercise had turned into a round of hell, he suspected from the beginning that Dorato's pompous attitude was hiding something, however he couldn't imagine what he had in store for them, furthermore nothing of what they were facing had been explained during the theory.

<< Maybe I have an idea, if I remember correctly in the manuals it was written that in cases like these we have to open the control panel next to each door, disabling remote control by cutting a certain wire.

There should be a screwdriver or something similar on the right side of the wall with which to open the panel >> suggested Alice, only recovering at that moment;

<<You are a genius my love>> Chiara replied kissing her on the lips.

Orlando and Lucia rushed to the door finding the screwdriver placed on the right side of the wall with which they opened the panel, inside there was the pliers with which to cut the wire that enabled remote control of the doors and a code to be entered with who takes manual control.

<< Let's get a move on, the water is rising >> urged Chiara seeing her knees completely submerged.

Lucia took the screwdriver and opened the control panel to find herself faced with a multitude of wires. Her brain told her to cut the yellow one but a doubt assailed her: what if it wasn't the right one?

The tension was great and he was sweating profusely, he knew he couldn't make any mistakes otherwise the doors wouldn't open and the simulation would fail.

<<What are you waiting for? Cut that damn wire!>> Leonardo shouted from behind her;

<<You can do it, we trust you>> Orlando added;

Her boyfriend's voice gave her the right injection of confidence so she took the pliers, closed her eyes and with all the strength left in her body she severed the yellow thread hoping to remember correctly.

Under normal conditions she wouldn't have had that doubt but being in a situation of high stress her brain could play some nasty tricks on her, she too felt doubts despite being a courageous and self-confident woman.

Once the wire was cut he entered the code hoping he hadn't made a mistake but to his great relief he heard Pandora signal the activation of the manual control of the Magellano's doors so Leonardo grabbed the handle pushing it outwards and freeing the passage.

<< Well done my love, you did it. I knew it >> Orlando told her, hugging her;

<< Let's get a move on before the lieutenant decides to let us drown in here >> Chiara urged them, patting Lucia on the shoulder.

The team rushed to the exit door, once they reached it they re-entered the code for the manual control after which they pushed the handle outwards exiting the Magellan as the water level inside the spacecraft reached their necks.

Leonardo threw the emergency kit into the sea, after which one by one they jumped into the water and then arranged themselves in a star formation, shooting the holographic SOS signal into the air.

Having completed the exercise correctly, they were reached by a rescue team with a boat, boarding them and taking them back to the pier.

Once they reached the shore, the instructors ran to meet them, helping them get onto dry land, all under the watchful eyes of Lieutenant Dorato.

<< You were very good, my compliments. The first team didn't know how to get out of the spaceship, but you went all the way. Now you can rest, your day is over >> the old woman told them;

<< We're joking I hope! This has nothing to do with what we should have done! You wanted to kill us in there! >> Chiara shouted at her;

<< Miss, I have to ask you to calm down, I understand your adrenaline given what you've been through but now go to the stand we have prepared where you can dry off and change.

Towels and hair dryers have been prepared for all of you, while as for the suit, all you need to do is activate its self-drying function and it will be as good as new >> replied the old woman while the lieutenant watched them from afar;

<< Leave it alone and let's go, we've had too many problems for today >> said Alice, taking her girlfriend by the arm and leading her away.

When they entered the stand in front of the pier they closed the door and began to settle down, women on one side and men on another, watched by the attentive and watchful eyes of some Agency employees ready to help them if they needed it.

<<We should have expected something like this from that crazy Dorato>> began Leonardo, still shaken by the blows he received on his back on which large bruises had appeared.

After a few seconds, a doctor sent by Dorato entered the stand to check on their state of health, especially that of Alice who, having hit her head, needed an immediate check-up to see if she was okay.

<<Nothing serious miss, she suffered a severe bruise to her head but nothing more, all needs do is rest for the of day and tomorrow will be back in shape>> he told her after having done the necessary checks;

<<Look at the blow I took>> said Orlando, observing a bruise on my left leg;

<<When we entered the spacecraft I warned you, you just had to look at Dorato's expression beginning of exercise understand that he was plotting something>> added Chiara who still wasn't happy with that change of plan;

<<What do you think demonstrate by behaving in this way? Putting the lives of students at risk is not one his duties>> added Lucia.

Despite the happiness of having guessed the wire to cut to open the doors, she was the most troubled of the group because her certainties had been shaken to their foundations for the first time since she found herself at Headquarters and now she wondered if she was really the person who he always thought he was.

She felt naked in front of the world, the castle of security and boldness in which she had always lived had crumbled in her hands and it scared her to death.

After about thirty minutes they left the stand getting into a golf cart that would take them back to Palermo but Orlando wanted at all costs to see the Agency's museum on the island of which they had only seen the entrance during the presentation tour of Lampedusa done months ago.

<< Come on guys, let's go, we have the rest of the day free. There's even a frozen crystal from Triton but can you think of it? It's something too fascinating >> Orlando tried to convince them, wanting to visit it at all costs;

<< I propose to please him, after all we are free >> replied Leonardo.

The visit to the museum proved to be extremely interesting as they were able to admire, in addition to the Triton crystal, many space suits worn by the first astronauts who went to the Moon, to Mars and to the space station orbiting around Jupiter.

There were kept many samples of lunar, Martian, Mercury and Venus rocks as well as the first extraterrestrial rock vein of Helium-3 coming from one of the largest asteroids which was located in the band between Mars and Jupiter.

Acting as Cicero there was always Pandora, to whom the Agency had dedicated an entire wing of the museum, retracing the stages of her life from the creation of the source code up to 2070, showing visitors the faces of those who had made a significant contribution to the birth and the development of what was defined as "the most advanced AI in human history".

Internally the building was very large with a beautiful white Carrara marble floor and was divided into various rooms: there was the one relating to Pandora and the one relating to the display of minerals brought back to Earth from across the solar system.

Another retraced the history of the Agency from its foundation until 2070 and the last told the story of human space explorations relating to the Moon, Mars, the space station orbiting Jupiter and the tragic adventures of the men who went beyond Jupiter.

That day the museum wasn't very crowded, when the kids arrived they were greeted at the entrance by a robot-employee and since they were cadets they could enjoy free entry and the sightseeing tour.

Beautiful sunlight was coming in from the ceiling and the temperature was such that the few tourists present were wearing flip flops.

Among the most recurring faces in the museum were those of Leonardo's parents and this did not escape the notice of any of the boys, in the human exploration room there was a holographic portrait of them in which they smiled while they were together on the "Olympus Mons " making the victory sign.

Meanwhile Orlando and Lucia visited Pandora's room together with Chiara, Leonardo paused in front of that hologram thinking that one day he too would be there but at that thought he felt a strong pang in his stomach and an old wound reopened in his soul .

<< Do you miss them? >> Alice asked, taking his arm;

<< When I see their faces I get stomach pains and nausea but I also feel strong anger towards them for having abandoned me>> he replied with his voice breaking with emotion.

<< I understand you but you should be proud of them, they have done great things during their career and I'm sure that if they could see you they would be proud of you too >> she said to cheer him up;

<< I've never told anyone but as a child at school I was often the victim of bullying and I'm not talking about simple pranks, I was beaten up in particular by a boy called Franco who hated me to death.

One day we clashed in the bathroom, I was angry because my parents had to leave for the Moon and they hadn't been there for my birthday so when he approached me, thinking he wanted to hit me I grabbed a soap dish left there by some careless child and gave it to him. Luckily he escaped with a head injury and a few stitches, I was suspended and forced to apologize but when I defended myself by telling what he had done to me in the past, Franco replied that the reason why he hated me was the success of my parents and everyone the children at school were very envious of me.

Now you understand? I was considered the luckiest in the institute because I was the son of two national heroes, but I hated them for not being present at my birthday.

It was only then that I began to look at them with different eyes and slowly understood the reason for their so many absences from home.

When I was getting used to that idea and for the first time I was trying to approach them in a constructive way they disappeared into thin air, this really hurt me, perhaps only now do I realize that I never forgave them even though it wasn't their fault. free choice >> Leonardo explained with tears in his eyes;

Leonardo remained alone in front of that hologram as beautiful as it was dramatic and yet in thinking back to the past he knew that Alice was right but he couldn't fight against that pain, it was too strong and too big, it scared him so much that he couldn't defeat it once. once and for all.

If he was really held back by those memories he had to get rid of them as soon as possible but how could he do that? He felt he didn't have the inner strength.

Maybe he didn't want to do it because succeeding meant forgetting them completely and he feared that the memory of his parents would fade away in a drawer of his mind, he always carried them with him under the illusion of being able to make up for lost time.

<< Alice said what in the past no one had the courage to point out to me, if I don't face this pain I won't be able to grow and I'm sorry dear mother and father but the time has come for your son to move on >> thought Leonardo whose cheeks were dug by large silvery tears coming from his eyes, shiny with emotion.

He dried his tears with the sleeve of his uniform and then joined his friends and when they saw him arrive none of them had the courage to say a word knowing how much he suffered when remembering his parents' glorious past.

<<Don't make those funeral faces, we still have a lot to do so let's get it>> he said giving him a big smile.

Alice looked into his eyes and understood that for the first time her friend was fighting her dragon but he wasn't the only one, Sofia together with her assistants also faced one and it corresponded to Pandora's code which she didn't want to decipher despite the approach recommended by Andrea had turned out to be the exact one.

Following the girl's suggestions, they had managed to identify the pattern that the AI followed for each of its self-improvements, yet opening that code required mathematical skills apparently unknown to the human race.

<< I give up, we have tried to apply every mathematical theorem but to no avail. We must consider the hypothesis that Pandora has created its own autonomous language made up of symbols and rules unknown to us otherwise we would have already deciphered it by now >> Lucrezia asserted, putting her hands in her hair;

<< We have to keep trying, if we try hard we will be able to get to the bottom of it >> Sofia replied trying to encourage the rest of the troop.

Since they had made the discovery they had only worked at his house because in the office they were kept under close observation by Martoprete and some of them, like Andrea, also had to take care of other tasks.

If at the beginning they had been enthusiastic about the possibility of making a great discovery, now the lack of progress frustrated them beyond measure.

<<I'll stop here for this evening, see you tomorrow in the office>> Lucrezia announced, getting up from the chair, taking her coat to leave the apartment;

<<Where are you going? There is still a lot we can try>> Andrea tried to convince her but by now her colleague had made her decision.

<<I'm not saying that I'm giving up, tomorrow I'll go back to work on it but I would also like live, haven't spent time with my boyfriend for too long so it's better take a break and if were you do the same>> he replied leaving the room apartment, closing the door behind him;

<< You're right, for this evening I would say we stop here. We're all tired and our minds are clouded, we'll think about it tomorrow>> said Sofia.

Lucrezia's words had reminded her that she hadn't spent time with Leonardo for many days and knowing the ordeal Lieutenant Dorato had subjected him to, she decided to invite him back to her apartment.

<<Are you really sure about that? You know well that it's not over, we can crack the code, I'm of it. We just have to dedicate more time it and...>> Andrea replied.

Once again he was about to explain that idea that had been floating in his brain for some time, however he didn't have the courage to present it to his colleague;

<< I understand your dedication, it is truly admirable but as Lucrezia said we will think about it tomorrow, for this evening let's dedicate ourselves to ourselves. Now go home and rest, I need a nice hot bath >> Sofia retorted.

He put on the "Delfi", went away and wrote to Leonardo to meet him at his house at 10 pm sharp while the clock showed 9 pm.

<< Let's hope he sees the message >> she thought anxiously but immediately received what she had hoped for;

"I'm coming," he replied.

When she returned to Andrea, she abruptly dismissed her, almost pushed her out of the apartment, after which she took all the holograms and hid them in her office, locking the door so that Leonardo wouldn't see what she was working on.

<<What a hurry, I'm going now. Why do you suddenly want to get rid of me?>> Andrea asked her as she took her holographic projector;

<<But what are you thinking, it's just that the water has reached right temperature and I don't want to have fill bathtub again so a nice evening>> she cut short, closing the front door in her face, all excited for the arrival of Leonardo who would never have said "no" to her despite having faced a tough exercise with Dorato

At the appointed time he showed up at her door bringing with him two nice steaming pizzas having rightly considered that given the short notice, Sofia had hardly had time to prepare dinner and she also didn't want to show up empty-handed.

<< Come in >> she said giving him a kiss on the lips;

<<Okay but stay calm, I can guarantee you that no one followed me>> he replied placing the pizzas on the table;

<< How long has it been >> she sighed, hugging him;

<<Actually it hasn't been that long but I'm happy to be here too if you don't mind I'd like prevent the pizzas from getting cold>> said Leonardo sitting down at the table.

<<In this regard, I bought your favourite, the Regina Margherita pizza>> he told her, opening the first of the two boxes;

<<You are an angel>> replied Sofia whose stomach was starting to growl;

<< I heard about Dorato and how he changed the training but the Agency's leaders were not happy about it, it seems that some cadets have filed a complaint >> he added taking a bottle of Barolo and two wine glasses;

<< Today was a real nightmare, it's fine to have to practice and prepare for the worst but this is exaggerated, two girls from the third group vomited in the spacecraft as soon as it started to move while one of my classmates hit his head violently during the exercise but according to the doctor it's just a bruise >> Leonardo replied biting into a slice of his pizza, white with porcini mushrooms, black truffle and sausage;

<< Dorato is famous for his unorthodox methods and the Agency had already reprimanded him in the past, but today he crossed the limit, I think he could be suspended >> Sofia explained, kissing him on the neck.

A moment after placing the bottle of Barolo on the table someone rang the apartment doorbell, scaring them.

<<Who is he?>> Leonardo asked, turning pale.

Sofia went to the intercom to check the identity of the nuisance, signaling to her boyfriend to stay silent so as not to be discovered.
