Chapter 6

After they got in the apartment Megan began changing. It wasn't the ideal outfit, but it couldn't be helped given the lack of clothing left behind. When attempting to lace up her shoes Megan realized her hands were still shaky from the events.

'How could I let my guard down? We almost died, and it's all my fault...What is he?'

Megan recalled the look in his eyes, and the uneasy feeling when gazing into them. Cameron has always been a little cold, but that look sent chills down her spine. With a single punch, he managed to fracture their attacker's face and damage the wall behind them.

'I'm not sure what happened, but one thing I do know is he saved me...The other stuff isn't important right now.'

When Megan finished changing and approached the door she could hear the news playing.

"When the videos first came in we assumed it was a hoax, but we've confirmed the reports coming from the southwest. They are experiencing a sudden winter storm, and it appears to have come out of nowhere. We still don't know how this happened, but our experts will be working around the clock to figure it out. In the meantime, the president has issued a state of emergency, and support is on the way. We advise everyone to remain calm, and stay in..."

Cameron turned off the tv along with the desk lamp.

"Wh-what was that back there?" Megan asked as she walked around the couch.

"I'm not sure. Ever since it happened I've had this weird feeling in my chest." Cameron rested his hand over his heart.

"Does it hurt?" Megan scooted closer examining him closely.

"I was sore earlier, but it's already fading," Cameron replied.

'It seems to have healed already, but it's hard to tell in this light.' Megan reached for the lamp.

"Most people don't have power right now, and once the panic buying clears the shelves looting could start. If they see lights we will be the first stop." Cameron stated.

"Will it really get that bad? The roads are a little icy, but that's it." Megan asked.

"It rarely gets below freezing in winter, and this is summer. There's no way the city has enough supplies to keep everything running. With the roads being iced over, and a delay in thawing them out stores won't get restocked. Here soon everyone will be worried about their own families, and people will cross all sorts of lines to protect them." Cameron glanced at the blood on his hands.

'I should get cleaned up now that she's done.' Cameron stood up from the couch when Megan grabbed his hand.

"It's my fault you had to cross that line." Megan lowered her head.

"It was an easy choice to make." Cameron carefully removed her hand.

While walking towards the bathroom he stopped and glanced over his shoulder.

"There's a heating blanket in the closet if you get cold, and candles if you want better lighting." Cameron disappeared into the bathroom.

Megan wasn't cold, but there was no telling if the panels would stay on. With this in mind, she gathered the blanket and a small heater. Running the central heat would still draw attention so Megan made arrangements.

'Gather all the blankets into the smallest room, and keep the heat going. If it really goes out we could just pack it into the same room...With only t-two of us, we would ha-have to get c-close.'

Cameron was just barely getting into the shower as chaos began in town. Only two stores still had power and those without stopped sales. This didn't go over well with the shoppers since the drive here they witnessed the other parking lots filled to the brim.

By the time they reached another store, everything could be gone, and this wasn't a risk they were willing to take. A man with a cart full of water, food, and baby formula pushed for the door. Observing the contents of the cart the manager said nothing for the man left cash upon the table.

This caused a chain reaction for most of the customers only had cards. With no other options to obtain their items, they bum-rushed the exit, and the people entering immediately reacted. People swarmed into the store clearing the shelves, and as the selection narrowed fights broke out.

It started from simple shoving and escalated after a firearm was pulled. Barely an hour has passed and anarchy has already taken over the city. Similar scenarios were erupting across California, and parts of Arizona.

Congregating discreetly in Washington was a small squad of agents. They were debriefing the president and his security teams about a possible attack on US soil.

"If that's the case why are we still here?" The secret service glanced at the others to prepare the plane.

"Your plan is to go into the air when they're manipulating the weather?" A general scoffed.

"We don't know the extent of their capabilities. With the bunker compromised I like our chances in being mobile." The agent replied.

"Arguing helps no one. " President Howard stated.

"This is honestly a waste of my time, and more importantly the president's time. I'm not ruling out the option of a weapon, but it wasn't an attack. If that was the case we would have a word of an assault right now. It was likely a test, and how we respond to it is crucial." A man declared from the shadows.

"Who is this asshole?" The general asked.

Speaking out was an older agent with a deep scar on his forehead. He had short silver hair and piercing green eyes. His name is Murphy, and for the past forty years, he has overseen a private division.

"I told you this would happen."

Standing behind Murphy was a young woman wearing an identical suit whispering into his ear. She has black hair trailing to her shoulders that was parted down the middle. The woman had a delicate complexion and brown eyes that scanned the room cautiously.

"What do you propose we do?" President Howard asked.

"Allow my team to investigate, and handle affairs as usual. You need to be seen in the spotlight controlling the situation." Murphy replied.

"And if an attack really happens?" The secret service asked.

"That's when you do your job." Murphy sighed while glancing at his watch.

A brief argument broke out in the bunker before Howard's decision. He put Murphy in control and offered him all the assets he needed to provide results. Murphy tapped his cane against the bunker flor before walking to the bunker's exit.

"Let's go, Mika," Murphy ordered.
