Chapter 22

Since Cameron went to sleep his body has been hovering above the seat by a quarter inch. The two riding up front became concerned, but stopping the car wasn't an option. Before the maps were a suggestion, but now they were a necessity.

The phenomena came with the radio, and GPS going haywire. Their car even died several times, but luckily the good samaritans didn't see the news yet. They just quietly helped start the car and didn't even glance at the blanket narrowly covering Cameron's floating feet.

Their current destination is a rest stop that's used for camping, but they still had some highway left to get there. Megan wanted to check on Cameron's condition once more but stayed put. She already received several lectures on the matter from Jordan.

"We've been making good time, but no way we luck out like that again." Jordan was looking for the exit.

"It's getting worse." Megan looked back at Cameron.

Cameron's hair was flowing as if the windows were open, and occasionally they heard an odd sound through the radio. A thud rang out, and Jordan was looking back to make sure Cameron was okay. With his eyes off the road, Jordan failed to see the trooper parked behind a hill.

Their car was riding over the line only slightly, but the trooper has had a slow morning. It was also the end of the month, and they had quotas to meet. As the lights lit up Jordan jumped and looked at the rearview mirror.

'We're fucked.' Jordan slammed on the gas.

"Call it in." The veteran ordered.

The rookie reached for the radio on his shoulder, but they were experiencing interference.

"It's n-not working." The rookie stuttered.

'Useless.' The trooper took one hand off the wheel to call it in personally.

After hearing static they both tinkered with their radios, but nothing was working. Unable to call for backup they focused on pit maneuvers. Catching up with them wasn't too difficult, but Jordan was keeping the lead.

"Why won't this shit work!" The trooper dropped his radio and put both hands on the wheel.

The rookie prepared himself for a potential shootout as they raced down the highway. As the trooper was closing in Jordan tensed up. The tip of the barricade was aligned with their back wheel as they tapped each other. Jordan's car began to sway back, and forth as he struggled to control the wheel.

"Wake up!" Megan shouted.

"Let me focus!" Jordan retorted.

They narrowly skid off the road as he made adjustments. Jordan was back on track, but the trooper was fed up. He floored it while aiming for the backdoor.

"Hold on!"

The rookie braced himself as they slammed into the side of the car causing them to spin out. As soon as the officers recovered from the collision they blocked off the front of the vehicle. They got out quickly with guns drawn when a white owl manifested upon the hood.

Cameron quit floating and awoke as the officers began screaming. Jordan was attempting to start the car, but it was stuttering. He looked up and noticed the officers on the road unconscious.

"About time you got up," Jordan told Cameron.

Jordan quickly got out and cut their radios as Megan retrieved their phones. The cops weren't budging but appeared to be breathing. It was similar to a catatonic state, and when Jordan noticed this he retrieved their belts. After crossing paths with the skinwalker, he didn't feel safe without a gun.

They jumped back into the car to try their luck once more and floored it. There was no slowing down till they found a back road. This was the way to another reservation, and once there they could rest momentarily. By the time tribal police were made aware of their presence, they would be on the road again.

'I hope we can make it that far.' Jordan could feel the car struggling to accelerate.

"I didn't know you could do that," Megan stated.

"You were floated in your sleep too. I wonder what else you can do." Jordan tried to make light of the situation.

"That wasn't me," Cameron replied.

"Who else could've done it?" Jordan glanced at the sky.

"The radio and phones quit working when it started. We even got stranded a few times because of it." Megan replied.

"I never affected the car before," Cameron stated.

"He has a point. You think it was the owl again?" Jordan investigated.

"I wasn't gonna say anything, but now that you mention it." Cameron contemplated sharing his dream.

The sudden silence from Cameron made them both uneasy.

"If you guys could go back to a normal life right now would you?" Cameron asked.

"Not at a-all." Megan replied.

"Depends." Jordan checked his rearview mirror.

"Depends on what?" Megan hit his arm before glaring at Jordan.

"It sounds like that scenario doesn't include him. I wanna know if it does." Jordan told Megan.

"Does it?" Megan looked back

Observing the concerned look on their faces Cameron smiled. He had no doubts that these two were truly his friends. Confident they would hear him out Cameron shared his dream, and his new destination. When the story finished the car fell silent once more.

"I know this is hard to believe, and it could've just been a dream, but there's one thing I know for sure. The storm happened, and my mom died because of it. I remember being asked so many questions as a kid, but nothing came to mind. Everything in that week was so vivid I can't see it being fake. How else can you explain what happens?" Cameron tried to break the silence.

"I never doubted you I just don't know how we can cross the border let alone find a ship." Jordan sighed.

'He doesn't look like an alien.' Megan tried to accept it.

"They started showing me the location, but the signal broke," Cameron stated.

'I can't bring them into something like that. Maybe I can convince them along the way.'

"Take a left up here," Cameron told Jordan.

"No offense, but you just woke up," Megan criticized.

"Just trust me," Cameron replied.
