The Spark

Kian was afraid and his face showed it without shame. He looked into his brother's eyes as he told him what happened last night. He described the bird and realized that some god heard his prayer. Kian was speechless.

"I also sent a letter to King Johan, saying that Father is plotting against him." Blick said.

"Why? Do you not care about what they stole from us? Dython took so much and now his son will take the rest." Kian explained.

"Father bent the knee and allowed Dython to take over. Don't act like he tried to protect us or his people. Our father is a coward." Blick said.

"Who answered you?" Kian asked.

"I... I don't know..." Blick said.

"I have to tell Father." Kian said.

"No, you can't!" Blick pleaded.

"What are you saying? Of course I do. You spoke about his death and possibly ours too. Are you mad?" Kian said.

"No, no. I'm sane. Just trust me. I will be able to protect you, but if you talk to Father then I won't be able to." Blick said.

"You promise you will protect us?" Kian asked.

"Yes, I promise." Blick said, hugging him.

"I hate this feeling... like the gods are looking down on us." Kian said.

"I know. But they are also watching over us." Blick said, rubbing Kian's hair.

"I guess." he said, letting go of the embrace.

They walked towards the hall and found their father sitting down at the table. They all ate their food silently. Kael stared at Blick.

"What? Can't a man sit down for a meal with his family in peace?" Blick said.

"If you showed up on time." Kael said.

"I slept in, that's all." Blick said, looking at Kian.

"Oh, that was it? Good." Kael said.

He laughed and the other siblings laughed with him. Blick smiled slightly as he hid his hatred towards his father. He couldn't show any sign of an alliance with King Johan, or he would be dead. For now, he will be a good son and brother. Servants picked up all the dishes and cleaned off the table. The daughters walked off together, as Blick was starting to walk away he saw Kian still sitting at the table. They made eye contact before he left the room.

"Why are you still here, Kian?" Kael asked.

"I-um- nevermind." Kian said, leaving the room.

'What a strange boy?' Kael thought to himself.

"Have you heard?" Kael heard from another room, "A man from the East is said to be an immortal. Even the soldiers said it."

"Mm? Immortal?" Kael said to himself.

"And he's a red-eyed demon." one said.

"R-red eyed?!" another shouted, "Where is he now?"

"I have no idea, but I've heard that King Johan wants to take him alive."

"So, there is a demi-god left?" Kael said laughing.

He then walked to his study and began planning his rebellion against the Empire. He hated Johan's father, and Johan was no different. He has decided to take back Wetherden. A servant walked in with a letter.

"Your majesty, a letter." she said, handing it to him.

Kael skimmed through it and ripped it in half when he finished reading it. He called for a messenger and handed him the letter.

"Take this to King Opius at once," Kael said, "And tell him now is the time to begin preparations."

"Yes, sir." the messenger said.

"*laughter* Oh, Johan. You won't even know what hit you." Kale said.

The whistling wind ran through the trees and the leaves waved in the air. Blick walked through the graveyard and knelt in front of a tombstone. The name read Lucy Yeal.

"I'll be joining you shortly, Lucy." Blick said.

After saying a short prayer, he stood up and saw the bird again. He took a step closer and looked into its eyes.

"Are you the one that answered my prayer?" Blick asked.

It looked at him before flying away. He watched as it flew overhead and then disappeared into the horizon. He turned around and saw his brother kneeling in front of their mother's grave. He knelt next to him, and they stayed there for a while in silence.

At a nearby inn a man was reading the latest issue of the local newspaper. The headlines read: "Mysterious Man Red-eyed man wanted". The man looked over the paper and saw piercing red eyes glaring at him. Before the man could stand up, the red-eyed man killed everyone inside and picked up the paper, now drenched in blood.

"Wanted?" he said, smirking.

The monster snapped his fingers and the bodies burned to ash. The ashes flew out the window. The monster wore a long black cloak and walked out of the inn with the paper in his hand. The fire is still burning from the roof. Townsfolk gathered around to watch the scene unfold. By the time they arrived, he was already gone.

The air chilled as Kael waddled to his room. His belly jiggled with each step. The moon rose above the hills and the town was silent. Kael closed the door behind him and started to change into his nightgown. His eyes closed for a second before they shot open and looked at the window. A strange bird sat on the sill and stared at him. He hurried to the window and waved his arms about and was yelling "shoo!". He aggressively slammed the window shut and locked it. He collapsed onto his bed and drifted to an unnerving dream.

"Dreams are a window into the world beyond, an entryway into the unseen realm of gods and monsters. But sometimes what we see in dreams is a warning, a message from a power higher than us all. And when the demons come knocking at our door, it's best to heed the call, for the end is near and close." a man said.

Kael turned around and saw a man made of light. Next to the man was a girl with wings and a halo. Kael was too shocked to speak. The man smirked and disappeared in a flash of light. The girl flew off with him. Kael woke up in a cold sweat. He slowly turned his head and saw the bird sitting on his sill, and the window was open.

"Blick... is this a warning?" he said to himself.

"I suggest you heed the call." a voice said.

Kael turned around and saw a dark figure standing in the corner of the room.

"Who are you?" Kael asked.

"Hear me, Kael Yeal, you will die soon." the figure said.

Kael was shocked by those words and looked back at the bird. The bird blinked at him and disappeared into the night sky. The figure in the shadow cackled before disappearing. Kael looked around and found that he was alone once again.

The sun rose, and Kael was still awake from the terrifying events that occurred last night. He rushed out of his room and found his children in the hall eating breakfast. Kian and Blick were both absent. In frustration, Kael stuffed his face full of garbage.

"Where's my eldest son?!" Kael demanded.

"I don't know." a servant said, "He left early this morning."

"Where did he go?!" Kael yelled.

"I-I don't know, your majesty." she said, trembling in fear.

Beggars cluttered the sides of streets. The smell was awful and would make a foreigner vomit. Stray dogs would eat dying citizens. The houses were poorly maintained, and some were even crumbling. Wetherden Royal Knights had to surround Blick completely to stop them from trying to kill him.

"Your father is a fat whore!" a man shouted from the crowd.

"We wouldn't be starving if he didn't have to eat ten pigs a meal!" a woman shouted.

"My child died because of you!" another one shouted.

"Bastard! We curse your father and your family!"

"Leave him alone!" a knight said.

"Don't worry, they can't hurt me." Blick said, walking through the crowds.

Kael walked through the palace gates and saw a messenger on horseback galloping towards him. The messenger got off his horse and bowed his head before handing him a letter.

"What is this?" Kael asked.

"King Opius has responded to your call. He is sending a legion to back us." the messenger said.

"Good, good." Kael said grinning.

"Sir, may I speak?" he said.

"No, you are dismissed." Kael said.

"It is urgent," he pleaded.

"What?" Kael said annoyed.

"There has been a massacre downtown. They have been killed with fire Energy inside an inn." he said.

"Not my problem. That's just someone acting tough." Kael said.

The messenger just stared at Kael.

"Get out of my sight." Kael said.

"Sir." he said, taking his leave.

The knights began pushing the poor people back and clearing the way for Blick. He finally made it to his destination, an old temple dedicated to the god of life. Inside was an old lady sitting on a broken bench gazing at the faceless statue. The knights stood by and didn't let anyone inside. Blick looked around and saw how terrible this great temple looked. The old lady saw him and bowed her head. Blick sat down next to her.

"It's terrible. What has become of Wetherden?" Blick said.

"Change needs to happen but change already has. I can feel the tide turning, the world spinning, the world changing." she said.

"Did you believe in them?" Blick asked.

"I do believe in them." she said.

"I heard the tales. They've abandoned us." Blick said.

"Not all... not all." she said.

"I've come to see if He is the one guiding me, but I'm afraid I have contacted one with a darker nature." Blick said.

"Would you like to hear a tale?" she asked.

"Sure." Blick said.

"There was a man, a feeble man. He was born sickly and frail, destined to live a short life. But the gods took pity on him and made a deal with him. He would be immortal and never die as long as he didn't break the rules of the gods. He lived a good life for a hundred years or so. But as time went on, his mind darkened, and he broke the rules of the gods. With his new found power, he sought to destroy them and take their power too. But the gods are smarter than him, they banished him to the underworld and bound him down there. They forced him to judge the souls that passed. Each god had their own chain that held him down. Suddenly, one by one, the chains broke, and his mind was becoming clear again. His power came back to him. But not all the chains broke, one remained. The final god, wounded and seeking help, went down to him. The god asked for his help and in return, he would give him his powers and freedom. The monster accepted and healed the poor and desperate soul. The chain snapped off and the god vanished without a trace. Now free the monster rose out of Hell and walks the earth." she said.

Blick stared at the statue and looked back at the woman, but she was gone.
