Chapter 7: Roomies

After waiting for what felt like an eternity, the Entrance Exam finally came to an end. The new hall filled with chairs was now completely occupied by those who had won against their opponents.

This means that the students present are likely to be strong ability users with high Ora Energies.

"Hey Sonic, what's your ability like?" James whispered to Sonic, who was seated close to him.

Sonic remained silent for a few seconds before responding. "Hmm. Are we supposed to be discussing such things now? I mean, we don't know anything about each other; this is our first time meeting. Don't you think it's best to keep what we can do to ourselves? At least, for now?"

Sonic was expecting a negative reaction from James, considering how he had just turned him down. But that didn't change James's smiling expression; rather, Sonic's response only brightened his mood.

"Well, Sonic, let's be friends then."

Immediately upon hearing the word "friends," it sent shivers down Sonic's spine. He couldn't remember the last time he had friends. Also, he didn't expect to become friends with someone like James.

Well, come what may, it wasn't a bad idea to be close to people who could protect you. Sonic knew that James was pretty popular among the students after challenging all of them, so maybe being friends with him would benefit him greatly.

"Sure, let's be friends. That's a good start," Sonic said with a smile.

"Alright, people! If you're here, then it's because you're officially students of the Magic Militant College," said Mister Leo, a dark-skinned sergeant in his early forties, standing about six feet tall above the ground. There was a large sword behind his militant suit, a sword built of strong magical beast crystal.

"Everyone, take a look at your Digital-Wrist-watches. They will be reading your Ora Energies and displaying them using numbers. Your number indicates your current level of ability as a user," Mister Leo explained.

As instructed, the students looked at their Digital-Wrist-watches, and numbers started displaying on the screens.

"I'm level 2?" a student complained. "But I did well in my fight," he added.

"Blockhead! Didn't you hear a word the sergeant just said? The number shown represents the level of your Ora Energy," replied another student whose watch displayed a higher number.

"It doesn't matter how well you fought earlier; what matters is your current Ora energy and how you can build it up," Mister Leo stated, noticing that some of the students weren't taking their levels to heart.

"I'm level three! Wow!"

"Mine is three as well!" The buzz continued.

Some students' watches displayed higher levels, but the highest number displayed on the watches was level 5.

"Huh? There's a level one among us," a student exclaimed, pointing in the direction of another student.

Most of the students were at level three or four since only the winners from the exam made it into the school, so they didn't expect anyone to be at level one.

It's was possible because two weak ability users might have faced off during the exam. Come to think of it, there were more level one students than they thought.

"So these weaklings made it into the school while stronger students didn't?" Some of the students thought.

Maybe that's what General Robert meant when he said he hoped those who were wise made it into the military school. He didn't use the word 'strong' but 'wise' for a reason.

"Wanna take a look at my number?" James said.

"Huh? Well, if you want to show me," replied Sonic.

"Since we're friends, let's at least know our levels, don't you think?" said James.

James had already looked at his watch and was impressed by the number he saw. He wanted Sonic to see it because he also wanted to see Sonic's level.

"Alright, James," Sonic agreed. He hadn't even looked at his own watch until James mentioned it.

As they both looked at Sonic's watch, there was silence between the two of them. Sonic was at level one.

"How am I at level one?" Sonic asked his system using his thoughts.

"The Digital-Wrist-watches read Ora energy and display the level a student possesses, but remember you don't have any Ora energy to begin with. You should be thankful that your watch is even displaying a number on it," said the Slayer system.

Now it all made sense to Sonic why he was at level one. 'Of course I'm better than the average student here,' Sonic felt proud of himself once again.

After seeing Sonic's level, James felt down, as he was no longer happy to show his level to Sonic. He didn't want Sonic to feel bad when he saw that he was at level five. But that wasn't the case here, as Sonic didn't care about the watch or the number displayed.

"That's quite the number you've got there," Sonic said to James with a genuine smile, but James thought Sonic was faking it since his level was pretty low compared to his.

"Hey, friend, don't worry about the dumb watch. Since you're here, I'm sure you will level up really fast. And good news! We're friends, so I'm going to train with you anytime!" James tried to cheer Sonic up, still thinking Sonic was sad about his level.

Mister Leo then resumed his announcement.

"There are enough rooms for each of you, but the military school suggests it's best to share rooms. We think it's best to have a roommate that you can train with. The first three male students that made it into the school will share a room, the first three female students will share a room, and just like that, the pairing goes until everyone has roommates. And also, the room doors can only be unlocked using your watch, so don't go to the wrong door," said Mister Leo.

This means that Sonic and James were roomies as they were the first set that passed the exam.

"Dude! We're not just friends, but roomies as well," James buzzed in excitement.

After giving the students time to find their roommates, Mister Leo continued.

"Alright, guys, tomorrow we will be having a group tour around the school at 10 AM, but for now, you all should follow the Militants to your rooms," Mister Leo announced.

But after the announcement, a voice echoed.

"To our rooms? Do you want us to starve to death?!" The voice echoed. As the students directed their gaze, it was the huge James, seated beside Sonic.

"I guess he really made it into the school without taking the exam."

"What a lucky dude. I really admire his confidence," a female student blushed, seeing James speaking for everyone. Soon, others backed him up in protest.

Mister Leo calmed the students down and continued his announcement.

"Ten virtual points will be given to you guys daily. You can check your watch to confirm. With those points, you can buy, order, and unlock things in the military school. In your rooms, there are air tubes that deliver anything you find and can pay for with your points. When you get to your rooms, there are glass panels with a dashboard. Select whatever you want and place your watch on the dashboard to transfer points for payment," Mister Leo explained in detail and walked out of sight.
