A CALL FROM THE PAST

Chapter 8: A call from the past

"Please, keep him away from my baby!" Kira begged, fear written all over her face. She tried to stand up from the bed, but the nurse held her down.

"Calm down, Mrs. Kira," the nurse said, trying to soothe her. "Your husband won't run away with your baby, and besides, you're not strong enough to get up yet." But her words weren't having any effect on Kira.

Kira wasn't listening, and was still in a state of panic. She was afraid of Enzo and what he could do. She'd spent so much time and energy to ensure the safety of her son, and she couldn't bear the thought of Enzo taking him away from her.

"You don't know my husband, nurse," Kira whimpered. "He's capable of harming my baby. Please, save my baby, or at least let me save him!" She tried to get up from the bed again, but the nurse held her down.

"Please calm down, Mrs. Kira," the nurse said. "If you're so worried about your husband and what he might do, I'll go check on your son and get back to you." She realized that simply talking wasn't calming Kira down, and that she needed to take action. "You can't leave here in your current state. You're not strong enough to take care of yourself."

Kira slowly nodded, feeling a bit more at ease. She knew that with the nurse present, Enzo wouldn't be able to harm her child.

"I'll be back, Mrs. Kiara," the nurse said. "In the meantime, just eat your food and try to stay strong." She smiled sweetly and walked away, leaving Kira alone with her thoughts.

Kiara watched the nurse walk away, and she prayed silently that Enzo hadn't harmed her child before the nurse arrived. If Enzo did anything to her son, she wouldn't be able to forgive herself. "I don't want to be a failure like my mother," she said, frowning.

Few minutes later…..

The nurse returned to the ward, a sweet smile on her lips. "I told you your husband wouldn't harm your child," she said, taking a seat next to Kiara.

Kiara let out a deep sigh and exhaled all of her tension. The nurse wondered why a woman would be so afraid of her husband. What had happened in this family to cause such fear and anxiety?

Curiosity got the best of the nurse, and she decided to ask, leaning forward and clearing her throat. "Why are you so scared of your husband, Mrs. Kira?" she asked. The question hit Kira like a punch to the face, and she sat there for several minutes, staring blankly, not knowing how to respond.

Kira knew she couldn't say anything bad about her husband, even though she desperately wanted to. She locked eyes with the nurse, who was still looking at her expectantly. She tried to think of an excuse for her husband's behavior, but nothing came to mind.

"Emm… I just don't like him, and I don't trust him," she stammered, biting her lip. Her hands were shaking as she lied, and she hated doing it. Lying went against everything she believed in, but in this situation, she felt like she had no other choice.

"I feel like you're lying, Mrs. Kiara," the nurse said, skepticism in her voice. "If your husband is mean to you, just say it so we can help you. He won't be able to take you home anymore." But Kiara was too scared to admit the truth, even though she knew that the nurse was right.

"My husband isn't mean to me, nurse," Kiara said, trying to sound more confident this time. "We just have marital issues, but we'll be fine." She knew that if she didn't convince the nurse, she'd keep asking questions, and she didn't want to risk exposing her husband and the consequences that would come with that.

The nurse heaved a sigh of defeat, realizing that she couldn't force the truth out of Kiara. It was obvious that Kiara was going through a lot in the hands of her husband, and the nurse couldn't understand why she was so afraid to admit it.

"I'll be leaving now," the nurse said, "but if you need any assistance, don't forget to hit the bell beside you." She walked to the door and left the room.

As soon as the nurse walked out, regret set in for Kiara. She wished she had opened up to the nurse, instead of defending her husband who didn't care about her or the welfare of their child.

Suddenly, she wished she had exposed him for who he really was, so the world could see his true identity. He'd hidden under the façade for so long, but she thought it was too late to do anything about it now.

Unknown Pov….

In the far end of the window, a silhouette began to take shape. The room was filled with dread, the only light coming from the tiny window where the silhouette stood. The figure was hard to make out, but it seemed ominous, as if it were a dark cloud hanging over the room.

"Tell me how I look," a young woman's voice filled the room. Her smile was wide as she awaited the praise of her accomplice.

"You look stunning, Aubrey," the accomplice said. "He won't be able to get over you."

Aubrey's smile grew even wider, pleased with the praise. It was clear that she had planned this carefully, wanting to make sure she looked her best.

"How could I ever look displeasing when I'm the queen of beauty?" Aubrey said, pride evident on her face. "I'll make him yearn for me every single moment of his life. I'll enter his life like an angel, and leave like the devil that I am."

"You know I never let go of my prey," she continued. "He is my wine, and I won't let go until I've drunk every last drop. I'll drain him until he's totally used up and useless." Her sweet smile had been replaced by a deadly frown, and her words were dripping with malice.

"I'll make him pay for dumping me for that lowlife," she said, her eyes filled with pain and anger. She was thinking back to the humiliation she had felt when her ex had left her for someone else, and made her feel like a lunatic in front of everyone.

Flash back…

On the day he dumped her on their engagement day, she had looked so beautiful. She had invited her friends and family members, and was dressed in a silver gown and diamond shoes. Her face had the radiance of a goddess, and her smile was radiant. But then, he had broken her heart, leaving her devastated and humiliated.

After an hour of waiting, she decided to call him, as her guests were getting impatient. But when she heard the response on the other end of the line, it was the most shocking and devastating news of her life.

"I'm tired of you, Aubrey," he said coldly. "Get a life and stop bothering me." The line went dead, and she was left in a state of disbelief and devastation.

She couldn't believe what she was hearing, and for a moment she thought she was dreaming. She remembered fainting twice, and then the humiliation and pain that followed. Her friends had turned against her, calling her cruel names. She felt like her whole world was falling apart.

And if that wasn't bad enough, a month later she heard that Enzo had married another woman. She couldn't believe it at first, but then she saw their wedding celebration on television. The rage and anger she felt was overwhelming, and she swore that she would make him pay for tarnishing her reputation and leaving her like a piece of garbage.

Back to present…..

She sniffed hard, fighting back the tears that were threatening to spill down her cheeks. "I need to go," she told her friend, reaching for her suitcase. "I'll make you pay for the pain you've caused me, Enzo. You will pay for what you've done." She said the last part under her breath, before turning and walking out the door.
