“It was not my place to tell. It was your grand-père’s. I think he thought he would wait until you were a little older and had made some decisions about what you wanted in life before he told you. He was scared you would stay here out of a sense of duty. Your grand-père wanted you to be free, but he always believed you would return here. He probably would have told you years ago, but he disappeared, and sometimes we don’t even tell the people in our family what they will inherit until they have met their mates. I think your grandfather will approve of me telling you now,” Margaux said, looking briefly at Stefano.
“You think he’s still alive?” I asked.
“With all my heart,” Margaux said. “Oncle Maurice is my favorite relative, aside from you and your sister, chère. I think I would know if he were dead.”
