Chapter 45: Childhood Friends

Shayla put the old doll down and looked around what used to be the place that held all her secrets.

When she was a child, she knew she was half wolf. She had seen her dad change hundreds of times. It was something she never had a desire to do. At least not at this age.

But she had always been curious about the mystery side of her. She couldn't tell friends. Her parents forbid her from doing so. She could only talk to other children from their pack about it and even that was frowned upon unless they were at secure pack meetings.

"Shayla, the world doesn't understand our kind and they don't want to. They can never know who we truly are. There are exceptions to this rule, such as Aunt Natalie and Uncle Matt.

But those kinds of humans are very rare and very special, and you'll know people like them if you ever meet them. So for now, we have to keep who we are a secret for safety reasons," her mother would tell her.
