CHAPTER 48

Adela's Point of View

I walk along the shore, lost in thought. Uncertainty clouds my mind. Honestly, I don't want to believe Emerald's words, but a nagging doubt clings to me, no matter how hard I try to shake it.

I'm heading towards the forest now; it's getting darker, but I'm not afraid. It's where I plan to meet Primo. I need to confront him, to know the truth, to have him confirm it.

But what if he denies it? People rarely admit their wrongdoings. I have to trust what I hear and feel from him, and then, perhaps, everything will be okay.

As I reach the entrance, I check my phone. I asked him to meet me here at precisely seven in the evening. It's only minutes away from seven, so I expect his arrival any moment now.

What's going through his mind as he makes his way here? Is he expecting good news or bad?

I gaze down at the sand and notice a small twig. I pick it up and start drawing random shapes in the sand.
