Happier

"Zoey...", Evelyn called out, stopping her halfway to the elevator room. She turned around in response. "Yes, Evelyn?", she answered.

"Good morning. Please, I hope you don't mind delivering these documents to our boss' desk. Do you?", Evelyn asked.

What documents?, Zoey thought before her gaze fell to the documents in Evelyn's hand.

Her joy knew no bound, realizing it was the exact one that had gotten missing. It seemed that it hadn't occured to Evelyn to have gone through them yet.

She stretched forth her hand to receive it, smilingly, "Not at all–

"Speak of the Devil and he appears, right? There is no need for that", Adrian's voice came from behind, out of nowhere. "I'm here already, so let me have it myself". Zoey had to think of a possible way to stop him, all she was doing was for her dad's sake.

"Oh, yeah. You may have it, sir", Evelyn withdrew the documents from her hands, but she successfully snatched them back, violently. Evelyn narrowed her eyes at her.

"No...", Zoey's grip tightened on them.

"Sorry, do you owe an explanation?", Adrian questioned her sudden act.

She was literally the worst at making excuses, but she had to come up with one.

"Erm, you see– Why don't you go to your office while I do a review on it and then, I will bring it to your desk? I mean, it's my job, right?", she asked, giving out a silly smile.

"Hmm, okay. I wouldn't deprive you of your job", Adrian said, pleased by her commitment to her work.

The initial awkwardness, especially from her end, was gone. No one seemed to be suspicious at all. The three dispersed into separate ways.

....

[Zoey's office]

She danced in with her eyes closed, snapping her fingers in the air and humming one of her favourite songs that perfectly described her mood– Happier by Marshmello ft Bastille.

"Lately, I've been, I've been thinking

I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier

When the morning comes

When we see what we've become

In the cold light of day we're a flame in the wind

Not the fire that we've begun–

Just then, she got a loud ring from her phone which made her pause in a frown.

The caller's ID revealed it was her superior boss calling. Although the call was important, she couldn't risk taking it within the vicinity of the company. She declined and went on with her crazy dance steps.

This time, her phone vibrated on her wooden desk. She didn't hesitate to check the notification. 1 new message:

[Boss lady: I hope you know you haven't accomplished your mission yet. Remember the deal and be hasty about it, else...].

Zoey didn't bother reading further. She simply pressed the power button and put the phone down. It was high time she left for his office. There was no time left to waste.

She arranged the necessary documents for the task and slot them in-between the company's main. She wished herself best of lucks and then, she headed for her office door and twisted the knob.

"Ouch!", she groaned in pain as her head accidentally bumped into someone else's, causing the files in her hands to fall to the ground. She hadn't looked up to see who it was yet.

"I'm so sorry, Zoey". The voice, it was that of his annoying secretary once again. Zoey could only wonder how long she had been standing there.

"I thought I was being hit by a rock", Zoey sizzled, struggling to gather the scattered files.

She felt dizzy in her head as she bent to lay her hands on them before anyone else could.

"Let me help you with that", Evelyn offered, but seemed Zoey wasn't interested in it. Evelyn wasn't someone she could trust easily.

"No, thank you. I'll be fine".
