Chapter 23: Emma

Emma had been back at her family's home for several days now. She had avoided her phone and email as long as she could, and as she walked into her father's office that morning, she could see her phone resting on the desk. She hadn't charged it in days, so she walked over to it picking it up and then grabbed her purse, pulling out her charger. She looked around for an open outlet.

After she had it plugged in, she clicked the power button and then saw she had several missed calls, but the only ones she noticed were the ones from Steven. Emma looked at his number. She didn't really want to talk to him, but she felt as if she had to call him. She tapped the call button and listened in anticipation as it rang. Part of her hoped that he wouldn't answer, but after the third ring, she heard his voice.

"Hi, Em."

She was silent for a moment.

"Hi, Steven."

There was a long pause, and then he spoke again. "I didn't think you would call back."
