Lost In St. Helena

A cold night in 1887, Southampton, Great Britain. 34 Year old Marcus Rutherford is a scientist who works on biogeography He is assigned to work in the island of St. Helena, In middle of the atlantic ocean. The newly launched cruiser Aurora was in a different route than the usual, it was tasked to stop and Buenos Aires, Argentina because of a diplomatic agreement by Argentina and Great Britain. By 9:30 PM, Marcus enters the ship and immediately goes inside his room. As he was awake for a long time, he wanted to get some sleep before landing in St. Helena.

Midnight, 3:45 AM. Suddenly Marcus is woken up by splashing of water around him and people screaming for help. He quickly tries to open his door but fails due to it waterlogging. Loud thunders could be heard as well, It was a storm and a terrifying one at that.

After 7 or so hours, Marcus is awaken randomly. The ship seemed calm, almost dead silent. There was still little amounts of splashes that could be heard, but nothing too crazy. He managed to get out of his room by smashing his lock with all sorts of items he could lay his hands upon. Finally he was able to see the wreck of this ship. Water everywhere upto the levels of his knees and it looked like the ship was stuck somewhere. When he finally got to the other side of the ship, he found that it was a remote island. He jumped over to the island to investigate where this was and if, there was anyone else that survived the brutal wreck of ship. Moreover, where did everyones bodies go? So many questions were left unanswered and he went deeper in the forest. The forest was pretty lush in its own, so many plants growing anywhere and everywhere they possibly could, Birds chirping and flying around Marcus without any fear. He knew that this was unusual and that the birds or the islands must have been untouched for eternity, as they were friendly towards humans who was feared by birds in any island regions that were already documented.

After 15 or so minutes of walking around, he found biological gold. Beavers and a lot of them!. Beavers were of huge interest in the world as they could be used to make hats. Canada was occupied by the Hudsons Bay company for the beavers, the border dispute over Cascadia between Canada and The US was also for the beavers. The thing however is, beavers were being brutally bred in Canada, if the outside world ever hears about this island, the ecosystems in here will surely perish or atleast get numbered heavily.

Marcus quickly snapped back to reality, he had to get away from this place as quick as possible. He started to walk faster to the ship. Once he reached the shore, he picked up a huge stick and started to doodle on the sand, the words could be hardly recognisable, even though it was an easy and thoughtful word in this case, 'Help'.

After 5 or more hours, he could hear them, rescue ships!. Realising how stupid he was at the time, by drawing the words on sand, something that could only read from above, he had to scramble another escape route fast, before the Ship leaves his vicinity. He had another plan pop us in his head, he quickly climbed the broken ship structures that could be used to climb up. He then went to the captains dorm and there he found what he was looking for. A flare gun, he quickly grabbed it and the flares and a paper explaining how it was to be used. He had to brainstorm his way through the paper and he went for the biggest decision of the life. He shot the flare gun, and it worked!. The ship which was going the other direction, shot a flare gun themselves to make sure someone was there and to this time, make sure to rescue them. He quickly shot another one, which didn't work. Now confused he used 5 more flares, all which went unanswered. The last flare was all he had, he took his shot… It worked. The ship rushed towards him and rescued him. As they thought this was part of portugese islands that were overrun by tribes, they didn't document the place as a new discovery. Marcus supported the theory as well and the island was not discovered until a decade later. The mystery surrounding what happened the magnificent Cruiser ship of Aurora was still a burdening mystery.

This is just a story type thing that I did for my school magazine, thought should upload it for no other reason than, Why not?.
